Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- Justin Thomas struck out a career high nine batters over six shutout innings and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Clinton LumberKings 8-2 Friday night. Thomas did not walk a batter and the Rattler offense took advantage of three Clinton errors while banging out ten hits. Wisconsin has a two game winning streak for the first time since May 5 & 6.
Both starting pitchers were going along fine through the first three innings. But with one out in the top of the fourth and the sun still shining, a heavy downpour dumped rain on Fox Cities Stadium and caused a delay of thirty-one minutes.
When play resumed, Thomas kept the LumberKings off the scoreboard in the top of the inning. Clinton starter Jake Rasner couldn't keep Wisconsin (21-33) from scoring in the bottom of the inning.
Ron Garth drew a walk to start the rally. He stole second to get into scoring position. Chao Kuan Wu, who had three hits in the game, singled in Garth for a 1-0 lead. A double by Bryan Sabatella moved Wu to third and an RBI single by Eddy Hernandez put the Rattlers up 2-0.
Thomas cruised through the rest of his outing. He scattered five hits, walked none, and left with that 2-0 lead.
Rasner didn't allow another run and turned things over to his bullpen for the bottom of the seventh. That's when the Rattlers really took control.
Reliever Juan Carlos Garcia did not retire any of the first six batters he faced. An error and a single put runners on first and third to start the inning. Casey Craig's single drove in the first run of the frame. A walk loaded the bases and when Curtis Ledbetter was hit by a pitch to force in a run, the score became 4-0.
The final four runs of the inning scored on a wild pitch, an error, a fielder's choice, and an RBI double by Robby Hudson.
The LumberKings (19-35) got on the board in the top of the eighth inning. An RBI grounder by Terry Blunt broke up the shutout bid. Later in the inning, Ben Crabtree drew a free pass with the bases loaded to force in a run.
But, the LumberKings left the bases loaded in the eighth and Lane Beus pitched a 1-2-3 ninth in his Timber Rattler debut to close out the game and give the Rattlers their second loss in a row.
Game two of the series is Saturday night. Paul Fagan (1-5, 4.89ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Juan Jimenez (1-1, 3.63ERA) will take the mound for the LumberKings. Game time is 7:05pm.
