Dayton Dragons News Release

Tuesday, June 28, 2022 l Game # 70 (4)

Dow Diamond l Midland, Mich. l 7:05 p.m.

Radio: Fox Sports 980 WONE

Dayton Dragons (2-1, 41-28) at Great Lakes Loons (3-0, 43-26)

RH Thomas Farr (0-3, 5.66) vs. RH Nick Nastrini (0-2, 4.63)

Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Great Lakes Loons (affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers) at Dow Diamond. Tonight's game is the first of a six-game series and the fourth game of the second half in the Midwest League's split-season format.

Season Series: Great Lakes 5, Dayton 1.

Last Game: Sunday: Dayton 4, Lake County 2. Austin Hendrick and J.V. Martinez hit back-to-back home runs and the Dayton bullpen trio of Evan Kravetz, Miguel Medrano, and Braxton Roxby combined to allow just one run in seven innings.

Historically Speaking: The Dragons first half winning percentage of .591 (record of 39-27) was the second best in franchise history, trailing the 2007 Dragons, who finished 44-26. The 2022 first half record was the fourth best in any half in Dragons history (2011 second half: 48-22; 2001 second half: 41-28).

Dragons in the Standings: Dayton finished the first half in second place, one game behind Great Lakes. They have opened the second half by winning two of their first three games, tied for second place, one game out of first.

What's Next: The 66-game second half is underway. The Dragons could qualify for the playoffs in one of two ways: 1) By winning the second half East Division title; 2) By finishing with the next best full-season record in the East Division (behind Great Lakes) should Great Lakes win the second half division title. If the same team wins both halves, the team with the next best full-season record qualifies as the second half representative.

Team Notes

Dayton is first in the MWL in home runs with 82 and first in slugging percentage at .417. However, the Dragons lead the league in strikeouts (their total of 801 is third most in Minor League Baseball).

The Dragons reached a 2022 high point (so far) of 21 games over .500 (36-15 on June 7). The last time they were 21 games over .500 came at the end of the 2011 season, when they were 26 games over at 83-57.

The Dragons roster includes 11 players selected in the first five rounds of the draft and nine of the Reds top 27 prospects (MLB.com).

Player Notes

Elly De La Cruz (seventh youngest position player in the league with at least 120 AB) over his last 28 games is batting .321 with seven home runs and 20 RBI. De La Cruz is among the top five in the MWL in nine major categories: home runs, RBI, batting average, hits, runs, slugging percentage, extra base hits, stolen bases, and OPS.

Joe Boyle has an earned run average of 0.72 and opponent's batting average of .089 on the year. Both figures would lead all Minor League Baseball, but he is five innings short of the minimum number to qualify.
