Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes simply couldn't stop former Major Leaguer Jason Repko.
Obviously Repko likes day baseball as the 34-year-old former member of the Dodgers, Twins and Red Sox drove in four runs to lead the Sioux Falls Canaries to a 7-4 win over the Goldeyes on Thursday afternoon.
It certainly didn't help the Goldeyes when Repko knocked in two of four runs in the first inning. The Fish were down 4-0 before they came to the plate and were never really in it again.
Winnipeg did cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth, but Sioux Falls scored twice in the eighth to put it away.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 5-8 on the season and lost their first series to Sioux Falls since 2001. The Goldeyes haven't lost a season series to Sioux Falls since 1999, but the Canaries now hold a 2-1 lead this season after taking the last two games in Winnipeg.
"We have to be more efficient throwing strikes and we can't get ourselves into a 4-0 hole in the first inning," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "When you aren't hitting and your defense is atrocious, you can't fall behind 4-0 in the first inning. That's just not going to cut it."
The Goldeyes made three errors in the first 10 games on the road to start the season, but have now made nine errors in the first three games at home.
After falling behind in the top of the first, the Goldeyes picked up a run in the bottom of the inning as leadoff man Casio Grider doubled, stole third and scored when Sioux Falls pitcher Shawn Blackwell tried to get Grider at third and instead, threw the ball into the Goldeyes bullpen.
Down 5-1, the Goldeyes added a pair of runs in the sixth as Casey Haerther singled went to second when Nic Jackson was safe on an error, went to third on a walk to Josh Mazzola and scored when Aaron Baker was thrown out on a fielder's choice. Jackson came home when Brett Krill doubled with two out.
With the score 7-3, Baker knocked in his second run of the game in the eighth when Jackson singled, Mazzola doubled and Jackson scored on Baker's ground out. Baker was 0-for-4, but he still had two RBI thanks to two productive outs.
Grider was the only Goldeyes player to have a multi-hit game. He doubled in the first and singled in the third, scored a run and had two stolen bases.
Blackwell (1-2, 2.12 ERA) got the win for the Canaries, while Goldeyes starter Kyle Anderson (0-1, 4.70 ERA) was tagged with the loss. Former Goldeyes reliever Chase Johnson picked up his fourth save of the season.
The Goldeyes will start a new series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. when the expansion Joplin Blasters come to town for the first time. Canadian Rob Nixon (1-0, 1.39 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg.
