WINNIPEG, MANITOBA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-7) erased a rocky first inning, and scored eight unanswered runs to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes (5-7) by the final score of 8-3 on Wednesday night at Shaw Park.
Starting pitcher Miguel Pena (2-1, 2.10 ERA) earned his second victory of the season after allowing three runs on six hits over 8 innings. Pena allowed faced eight batters in the bottom of the first inning, all three runs to score. The lefty was dominant for the rest of the night, retiring the next 11 batters, and allowed just three more Winnipeg batters to reach base the rest of the night.
The Canaries posted their biggest offensive inning of the season in the top of the 4th, plating home five runs on five hits, highlighted by a Richard Stock two-run single. The Birds would strike again in the top of the 9th for two more runs to secure the win.
Third-baseman RJ Perucki had a good night at the plate for the birds, going 2-for-5 with a pair of singles and two runs scored. Perucki is now 4-for-9 in the first two games of the series, and has watched his batting average jump from .143 to .216 over the last two games.
Utility man Vickash Ramjit continues to impress in his first season with the Canaries, finishing the night 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Ramjit is now batting .333 with 13 hits in 12 games with the Birds this season.
RHP Shawn Blackwell (0-2, 2.45 ERA) will toe the rubber in the final game of the three-game series on Thursday morning against Winnipeg. It will be the first day game of the 2015 season for the Canaries, with first pitch slated for 11:00 AM. Catch all of the action on Sioux Falls Sports Radio AM-1230 and FM-98.1.
The Canaries continue their week-long roadtrip with a weekend series against the St. Paul Saints before returning to the Birdcage on Monday June 8th as they open up a seven game home stand against the Grand Prairie and St. Paul.
