Wichita Wingnuts News Release

FARGO, ND (June 4, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts were able to take a big first inning and build upon it down the stretch on their way to running away with an 8-2 victory over Fargo-Moorhead on Thursday night at Newman Outdoor Field. Tim Brown was solid as normal on the hill through seven innings, allowing only one run and Brent Dean became the first hitter to tally four or more hits in a game as the offense exploded.

The Wingnuts (9-3) jumped ahead thanks to a big first inning. Jayce Ray led off with a single and moved to second on an infield single by David Espinosa with one out. An errant pickoff attempt by Fargo- Moorhead starter Jeremy Gooding moved the runners into scoring position. This became important because it allowed Ray to race home on a wild pitch and start the scoring. John Nester drove in Espinosa with a base hit to make it 2-0. T.J. Mittelstaedt smoked a double to put runners on second and third once more. A fielder's choice grounder from Alberto Gonzalez scored the Nuts' third run and then Brent Dean made it 4-0 by beating out a bunt single with a runner on third.

The RedHawks (4-10) would score the only run against Wichita starter Tim Brown in the third inning. Joe Staley's infield single allowed him to advance to third on a double by Charlie Riverio. Zach Penprase lifted a sacrifice fly to right that plated Staley and cut the lead to 4-1. Brown would end up earning the win after lasting 7.0 innings and striking out six while surrendering six hits.

The Wingnuts built up their lead with a three-run fifth inning. Facing relief pitcher Bryan Blough, Gonzalez reached on an error by Penprase to start the frame. Dean came through with his second hit and then moved to second on an error by the right fielder while Gonzalez went to third. Dustin Geiger plated a run with his team-leading ninth RBI and then Oldham increased the lead to 8-1 via a double.

Fargo-Moorhead mustered one more run in the eighth against Al Yevoli to register the final 8-2 score. Drew Muren drove in the run with a fielder's choice bouncer to first.

The RedHawks committed five errors in the game. The Wingnuts knocked a season-high 14 base hits as, for the second straight night, everyone in the lineup recorded at least one hit.

The Wingnuts open a new series with Lincoln on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Jason Van Skike will take the mound against Saltdogs righty Zach Varce.
