Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The stage has been set for the Brandon Wheat Kings Annual Intrasquad game scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Westoba Place.
Day two of the Western Hockey League club's Main Camp closed out Saturday night with Team Black outscoring Team White 7-3.
Goals from seven different players, including three veterans - Rylan Bettens, Baron Thompson and Chase Hartje - gave the Blacks a 3-0 first period lead and they never looked back.
Defenceman Garrett Sambrook, who spent the 2017-18 campaign with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Virden Oil Capitals, Jack Zayat, William Highet and 15-year old Brett Hyland rounded out the scoring for Team Black, who received a solid 15-save performance from netminder Jiri Patera during the game's first half.
The 19-year old from Prague, who was Brandon's second selection in June's Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, spent last season with the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the USHL, appearing in 34 games and compiling a 3.24 goals against average and a .901 save percentage.
"It was a lot of ups and downs," Patera told the Brandon Sun this week. "After three months our goalie coach quit there so I was kind of upset about it but I needed to move on. During the season, Vegas sent goalie coach Mike Rosati there and he spent two weeks there and he helped me a lot. He gave me a lot of confidence."
Patera was chosen by the Golden Knights in the 2017 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
Scoring in a losing cause during Saturday night's scrimmage were 16-year old Ridly Greig, with two and second year center Marcus Sekundiak.
Greig, who was the Wheat Kings first round selection in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft, spent the night between wingers Nolan Ritchie and Jake Chiasson. Ritchie is coming off an outstanding season with the AAA Midget Wheat Kings while Chiasson was chosen by Brandon in round one of this year's bantam draft in Red Deer.
Earlier today, veteran Luka Burzan scored twice and Ritchie had one as Team Black edged the Gold Team 3-2.
Stelio Mattheos and 16-year old Bode Hagan fired goals in a losing cause.
Sunday's Intrasquad game, presented by Canad Inns Destination Centre Brandon, is a 2pm start with doors to the arena set to open at 1:30pm.
That game will mark the conclusion of Wheat Kings' camp, with the team scheduled to kick off their 4-game pre-season schedule Friday night against the visiting Regina Pats.
Tickets to Brandon's two pre-season home games as well as the club's 2018 Brandon Sun Home Opener, presented by TELUS, go on sale at 10am Tuesday at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
