Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs News Release
ROANOKE, Va. - Jesse Schwartz had a goal and two assists, Brad Barone made 24 saves, and the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs cruised past the Evansville Thunderbolts, 4-1, Friday night at Berglund Center.
The Rail Yard Dawgs would start the scoring with just over five minutes left in the first. Brian Rowland fired a wrist shot from the point that caromed off an Evansville defender's skate. It slid through the legs of Alex Murray and the Dawgs took a 1-0 advantage.
They added to that lead later in the first as Schwartz caught Evansville sleeping on a line change. He fired a stretch pass to Mac Jansen at the blue line. He motored down the right wing and fired a shot top shelf past Murray to make it 2-0.
The Dawgs kept it up in the opening minute of the second when Travis Armstrong let loose a slap shot from the point that Schwartz deflected in the slot and past Murray. Evansville responded later in the period as Max Mikowski set up Shayne Morrisey on the back door for a tap in that pushed the score to 3-1.
Roanoke extended its lead to three once again early in the third. Cal Miska took a shot that deflected off of Schwartz in front and went to Jordan Carvalho on the back door. Carvalho tapped it in and the Dawgs lead was back to three at 4-1.
Barone stopped every shot he faced in the third and finished the game with 24 saves on 25 shots. Schwartz set a new career high for points in a single game with three as he notched a goal and two assists.
The Dawgs earned a point for the fifth consecutive game and improved to 17-15-2, while the Thunderbolts fell to 5-27-2. The two teams will face off again on Saturday for Super Hero Night at Berglund Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM. The pregame show on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network begins at 6:50 PM.
