Love Scores First Goal in Narrow Defeat to Peoria

Macon Mayhem News Release
Playing severely undermanned, the Mayhem hung with the first-place Peoria Rivermen all night but were edged by a 3-1 final score.
The Mayhem got off to an electrifying start to Friday night's game, drawing first blood just 4:47 into the contest. Vincent Caligiuri, who's had more experience playing against the Rivermen than anyone, probed down the left wing on a 3-on-1 and fed a pass to the trailer, Taylor Love. Love slid the puck past Stephen Klein to open the scoring with his first goal with the Mayhem. Ian Sylves denied all ten shots he faced in the opening stanza.
Peoria began tipping the scales in period two, firing 11 shots on goal as they buzzed for the tying goal. Sylves continued to keep the Rivermen at bay until the 18th minute of the second period, when Ben Oskroba finally broke the ice for Peoria.
In an offensive zone faceoff win by Ben Blasko, Nick Neville quickly cycled the puck to the blue line for Oskroba. The veteran defenseman ripped a wrist shot through thick traffic, beating a screened Sylves over the shoulder. The squads entered the second intermission deadlocked in a 1-1 tie.
Just 3:19 into the third period, another defenseman lit the lamp. Justin Greenberg cycled the puck up to the high slot to Kevin Patterson, who slung a wrist shot from long range past Sylves to give the Rivermen their first lead of the game. Macon's comeback attempt fell short as Klein held his ground in the closing minutes. Pijus Rulevicius whipped the puck down the ice in the final 30 seconds and into an empty net, sealing the deal for the Rivermen.
Sylves played well in net, stopping 37 of 39 shots on goal. However, he was charged with his 6th regulation defeat of the season. Klein earned his 15th win, turning aside 20 of 21. The Mayhem will close out the three-game home stand with the Rivermen tomorrow night on Camo Night, presented by Tommy's Bakery & Café. Puck drop is set for 7:35 pm EST.
