Dawgs Come up Short in Fayetteville, 4-3

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Colton Wolter scored twice and Travis Armstrong had a pair of assists but the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs were defeated by the Fayetteville Marksmen, 4-3, Saturday night at the Crown Coliseum.

The Rail Yard Dawgs got on the board first just under five minutes into the first period. Armstrong slung a shot from the point that Kyle Moore deflected in front of the net and past Blake Wojtala to make it 1-0.

Fayetteville tied it with just over a minute remaining in the first. The Dawgs turned the puck over in their own zone and Max Cook found Brian Bowen alone in the slot. His initial shot was stopped by Stephen Klein but he was able to tuck the rebound into the net and the game was tied at one.

The Marksmen took the lead in the first minute of the second period. Just as a power play expired, Taylor McCloy was fed on the back door for a tap-in past Klein to make it 2-1.

Roanoke answered later in the second. Armstrong controlled at the blue line and fed Wolter with a no-look pass at the right wing circle. Wolter ripped a wrister past Wojtala and the score was squared at two.

Fayetteville regained the lead however with a shorthanded tally. The Marksmen won a defensive zone draw and McCloy and Luke Stork charged out of the zone, creating an odd-man rush. McCloy hit Stork with a backside feed that he rammed home and Fayetteville went on top, 3-2.

Later in the same power play, the Rail Yard Dawgs worked the puck to Wolter on the right wing. With Josh Nenadal providing a screen in front, Wolter fired a shot through Wojtala's short side, tying the score at three.

But the Marksmen again answered in the final minute of the second period while working on their own power play. Stork was fed for a shot in the high slot that he blasted just under the crossbar, pushing the score to 4-3, a score that would hold for the remainder of regulation.

Wolter scored twice, Armstrong had two assists and Klein made 32 saves in the losing effort. The Dawgs dropped to 1-7-1 with the loss while Fayetteville improved to 8-0-1. Roanoke will return to action on Friday night at home against the Huntsville Havoc. Puck drop at Berglund Center is scheduled for 7:05 PM and the pregame show on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network begins at 6:50 PM.
