
David Shantz's 31-save effort backstops Victoria to a 3-2 victory over Idaho

Victoria, BC - In a Wednesday night match-up at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Salmon Kings took on the Idaho Steelheads in the first game of a three-game set. The Salmon Kings gave David Shantz the start in net, while the Steelheads went with Tyler Beskorowany.
Victoria opened the scoring 15:11 of the first period when Derek Couture scored his fourth goal of the season after deflecting Ryan Turek's point shot past a screened Beskorowany. The Salmon Kings' took their 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Mark Derlago notched his eighth goal of the season and lone marker of the second frame at 3:23 after finding a loose puck in front of the net and backhanding it past Shantz to tie the game. The score was 1-1 heading into the third period.
The Salmon Kings regained their lead when Rick Cleaver netted his second goal of the season at 4:14 of the third after breaking in off the left wing and snapping the puck past Beskorowany. Idaho replied at 12:58 on the power play after the Steelheads broke in on a 2-on-1 rush and Justin Taylor shot the puck from the left faceoff circle past Shantz low blocker side. Taylor's marker was his second goal of the campaign. Victoria's Milan Gajic scored his team-leading fifth of the season at 15:27 after skating in off the right side and putting a quick shot past a screened Beskorowany. The Steelheads pushed forward in the final minute with an extra attacker, but were unable to net the tying goal. Salmon Kings 3 Steelheads 2.
Victoria went 0/1=00.0% on the power play, while Idaho was 1/5=20.0%. The Steelheads outshot the Salmon Kings 33-30.
The Salmon Kings continue their three-game series with the Steelheads this Friday November 5th and Saturday November 6th at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. This Saturday's contest is "Canadian Armed Forces" night where the Salmon Kings will celebrate the men and women of uniform as well as the Navy Centennial. The team will be wearing commemorative Navy centennial jerseys, while a select number will be auctioned off live following the contests. Also, great Military displays and exhibits will be on-site!
