Winston-Salem Dash News Release

KINSTON, NC (APRIL 8, 2010) - Dash shortstop Eduardo Escobar went 4 for 5 at the plate and made several outstanding defensive plays as Winston-Salem (1-0) started the 2010 season on the right foot with a 7-1 win over the Kinston Indians (0-1) in front of 4,062 fans at Grainger Stadium.

After both teams traded scoring chances in the first two innings, the Dash struck for three runs in the third. After Drew Garcia walked and Justin Greene reached on an error, Escobar slammed a two-run double down the left field line to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead. Escobar then moved to third base after alertly tagging up on a medium-range fly ball off the bat of Josh Phegley. Kinston starter Kelvin De La Cruz (0-1) then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Escobar to score from third and give the Dash a 3-0 lead.

Winston-Salem added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings off solo home runs by Kenny Williams, Jr. and Brandon Short, respectively, to make it 5-0.

Dash starter Justin Edwards (1-0) quieted the Indians' bats for most of the night. Making his first opening day start as a professional, Edwards scattered five hits over six innings, registering ten ground ball outs.

Kinston's only run came in the fifth inning, when Ronald Rivas hit a two out triple and scored on Jordan Henry's RBI single.

The Dash put the game out of reach with two more runs in the eighth inning. Seth Loman doubled and Jon Gilmore reached on an error. Both scored on Garcia's single to left field to put Winston ahead 7-1.

Dan Remenowksy and Gregory Infante combined to provide three shutout innings of relief to preserve the win.

Escobar added another double and two singles over the course of the ballgame to tie his career high with four hits.

Winston-Salem tries for a 2-0 start to the season Friday night when it plays the K-Tribe in game two of the four-game series. RHP Nate Jones makes his season debut and Dash starting debut. He went 2-1 with a 3.65 ERA in 32 relief appearances for Winston-Salem in 2009. He will be opposed by LHP Nick Hagadone.

First pitch on Friday is at 7 p.m. The audio webcast pre-game show begins at 6:45 at www.wsdash.com.

The Dash home opener and the first game at BB&T Ballpark is Tuesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. against the Potomac Nationals.
