Dash Waste Late Lead, Fall to Hillcats in Extras

Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Lynchburg used a four-run ninth inning and a solo home run by Matt Hague in the top of the tenth inning to rally for a 6-5 win over Winston-Salem in the series finale on Thursday afternoon at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Michael Dubee, who pitched for Winston-Salem in 2008 and was traded to the Pittsburgh organization earlier this year, recorded the final three outs to preserve the win and collect his second save of the season.

Trailing 4-1 entering the ninth inning, Lynchburg began their comeback against Dash closer Kevin Asselin. Mile Durham walked to lead off the inning and Alex Presley singled. Jared Keel plated both runners with a double to deep center field to bring the Hillcats within two. Winston-Salem turned to the bullpen once again and brought in Santo Luis. But the first batter he faced, Maiko Loyalo, deposited a two-run home run over the right field wall to knot the score at five and send the game into extra innings.

With one out and the bases empty in the top of tenth inning, Hague smacked a solo home run off Ricky Brooks to give the Hillcats their first lead of the game. The poor showing for the Dash bullpen wasted a solid outing from starting pitcher Anthony Carter, who left the game in the seventh inning with a 5-0 lead. Carter tossed 7.1 innings and limited the Hillcats to one run on one hits with seven strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Dash took a 1-0 lead when center fielder Kent Gerst hit a solo home run off Hillcats starting pitcher Ronald Uviedo. It was Gerst's first at-bat in the Carolina League as he was recently called up from Low-A Kannapolis to replace Jordan Danks, who was promoted to Double-A Birmingham.

Winston-Salem pulled away with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning that produced four runs. First baseman Jimmy Gallagher doubled to lead off the frame and scored on an RBI single by Christian Marrero. Catcher Logan Johnson followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. With two outs, Kyle Shelton lined an RBI double and Gerst added an RBI single to extend the Dash lead to 5-0.

The Hillcats plated their first run in the eighth inning when Dash reliever Hector Santiago walked Jordy Mercer with the bases loaded to score Jared Keel. RJ Rodriguez (3-0) worked two scoreless innings of relief for the Hillcats to garner the win. Brooks (0-1) took the loss for the Dash after allowing the go-ahead home run in the tenth inning.

Uviedo lasted six innings for Lynchburg and surrendered five runs on eight hits, but avoided the loss due to the Hillcats ninth inning rally.

The Dash hit the road over the weekend for a three-game series against the Salem Red Sox. In the opener on Friday night, Winston-Salem will send RHP Levi Maxwell (0-5, 6.38) to the mound, while the Red Sox will counter with RHP Seth Garrison (2-2, 6.67). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Single-game tickets are also available for games at Wake Forest Baseball Park through June 17 and can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
