May 14, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
The first three games of the series between the Frederick Keys and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans have been decided by one run, so why would the finale be any different? SS Pedro Florimon's solo homerun in the 11th pushed Frederick past Myrtle beach, 7-6.
LHP Brian Matusz got the start for the Keys. He got some early run support. Frederick was able to load the bases on two singles and an error, for 1B Brandon Waring. The slugger came through with a two-run single, giving the Keys an early 2-0 lead. Waring was able to move up to second on the throw, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. DH Chris Vinyard grounded out to short, knocking in a run, and extending the lead to three.
The Pelicans got on the scoreboard in the third. DH Jason Heyward drilled an opposite field solo homerun, making it a 3-1 ball game.
That was the only run Matusz would allow. The southpaw went 5.2 and allowed one run on four hits, while walking four and striking out six.
The Keys extended their lead in the fourth. With two on and one out, Florimon hit a two-run double to make it a 5-1 ball game.
The Pelicans stormed back into the ball game after Matusz exited. In the seventh, RHP Andy Barb surrendered a leadoff single to CF C.J. Lee and a walk to RF Jon Mark Owings. A batter later, 3B Donell Linares hit a three-run homerun to pull the Pelicans to within one.
RHP Cliff Flagello came in to pitch the eighth. With one down, C Benji Johnson tied the game with a solo homerun. The tie didn't last long. With two outs, Owings reached on an infield hit. SS Robert Marcial then walked. Linares followed that up with a single, knocking in Owings, and giving Myrtle Beach their first lead of the game.
The lead lasted until the ninth. With RHP Benino Pruneda Jr. in the game for Myrtle Beach, the Keys staged a little rally. LF David Cash singled and stole second. CF Matt Angle drove him in on a single to left, tying the game at six.
Frederick couldn't win it in the ninth. The game went all the way to the bottom of the 11th. With LHP Tyler Wilson in the game for Myrtle Beach, Florimon led off the frame with a solo homerun to make the Keys walk-off winners by a score of 7-6.
LHP Jake Stevens tossed a scoreless 11th to pick up his first win of the season. Wilson took the loss, dropping to 0-2.
