Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Pelicans escaped Hurricane Irene, but couldn't duck a doubleheader sweep by the Dash on Friday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 6,952 fans at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem held Myrtle Beach to one hit in the first game and won 3-0, and took game two, 6-1, behind a six-run third inning.

The two wins for Winston-Salem extended the Dash's lead in the Southern Division to 1.5 games because Kinston's game was postponed on Friday.

Offense was difficult to come by for both teams in the first game. Winston-Salem (34-28, 66-66) got on the board right away, though, against Pelicans starter Chad Bell. Tyler Saladino led off the inning with a double and advanced to third when Juan Silverio singled to right. Andy Wilkins then followed with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Dash added another run in the second inning when Kyle Colligan doubled down the left field line and came around to score on a single by Daniel Wagner.

Ryan Buch did the rest for Winston, holding Myrtle Beach (28-33, 68-62) to only one hit in five innings in his third start since coming off the disabled list.

In the sixth, the Dash added one more insurance run when Ian Gac singled, moved to second on a bunt by Nick Ciolli. Blanke moved Gac to third with a single, and Colligan drove him home with a sac fly to make it 3-0.

Taylor Thompson took over for Buch in the sixth and threw two scoreless, hitless innings. He earned his team-leading 14th save, and Buch (4-4) got the win. Bell (3-2) was hit with the loss despite throwing a complete game and giving up only three runs (all earned).

The one-hitter for the Dash pitching staff was the fourth of the season, and tied the mark for lowest hit total by an opponent in 2011.

In game two, the Pelicans reached the scoreboard first. Both starting pitchers had control problems early in the game. Myrtle starter Kasey Kiker walked the bases loaded in the first but didn't allow a run. In the second, Dash starter Andre Rienzo loaded the bases and walked two batters but also didn't give up a run.

The Pelicans got on the board in the third, when Andres James singled and later came around to score on Jared Prince's single. The run allowed by Rienzo was the first run given up by a Dash pitcher in 34 innings, dating back to the second inning of Tuesday's game at Salem.

Winston responded quickly. With one out in the bottom of the third, Silverio and Wilkins both walked. Gac then singled to score Silverio and tie the game at one. Ciolli then reached on an infield single before Jared Mitchell walked to give the Dash the lead. That spelled the end for Kiker, but not the Dash offense. Relief pitcher Colby Killian then surrendered a two-run double to Colligan and a two-run single to Luis Sierra. That amounted to a six-run inning for the Dash.

Rienzo (6-5) lasted five innings and only gave up the one run en route to the victory. He allowed five hits and struck out one. Kiker (3-3) got the loss after allowing five runs (all earned) on two hits and walked six in 2.1 innings.

Winston-Salem and Myrtle Beach continue their four-game series on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. LHP Matt Wickswat (5-5, 4.29) throws for the Dash opposite LHP Miguel De Los Santos (5-3, 3.88).
