Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Woodbridge, VA - In a season-long series of being dominated, the Wilmington Blue Rocks (60-67, 24-34) bookended their ledger at Pfitzner Stadium this season with blowout wins. On Thursday night, the 2011 Blue Crew's final game at the home of the Potomac Nationals (61-67, 32-27) this season proved its most productive offensive day since its first game in Woodbridge, VA, as an 11-5 win avoided a three-game sweep. The win lessened the Blue Crew's deficit to 7.5 games back of the P-Nats for a playoff spot with a just 11 games remaining on the schedule.
A back-and-forth affair saw Wilmington grab a 1-0 lead on back-to-back two-out extra-base hits by Deivy Batista and Whit Merrifield in the third. Potomac responded with a couple of scores against Tim Melville in the bottom half of the frame when Sandy Leon and Zach Walters worked consecutive two-out bases-loaded walks. Tim Ferguson's double and a Jose Lozada error plated a pair for the Blue Crew in the fourth before the P-Nats tied things at 3-all on a Jeff Kobernus groundout in the bottom half of the frame.
The Blue Rocks scratched out single scores in the sixth and seventh. Julio Rodriguez drove in a go-ahead tally with a two-out double in the sixth against Rob Wort. Nick Van Stratten's run-scoring double made it 5-3 an inning later.
A six-run eighth cemented things as Potomac's bullpen imploded. Van Stratten and Joey Lewis combined on consecutive two-run doubles while Yem Prades followed with a run-scoring single to highlight the frame. Eury Perez and Francisco Soriano each singled in a two-out run in the bottom half of the inning to round out the scoring.
Melville (10-9) tossed five frames to secure the win while reliever Mitchell Clegg (4-6) allowed three runs in 2.2 innings to absorb the loss.
The Blue Rocks' final road trip of the season shifts to Salem, VA for four games in three days against the Salem Red Sox. On Friday night, the teams will play a couple of games as they finish a suspended contest from July 8 at 5:30 p.m. and play a seven-inning affair thereafter. Broadcast coverage begins at 5 p.m. as studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
