Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Game One: LHP Chad Bell (3-1, 3.01) at RHP Andre Rienzo (5-3, 3.33) Game Two: LHP Kasey Kiker (3-2, 5.79) at RHP Ryan Buch (3-4, 5.21)

ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Pelicans salvaged the final game of their three-game home set against the Lynchburg Hillcats, avoiding a sweep in walk-off fashion. Andrew Clark's 12th-inning bases-loaded walk against former Pelican Matt Crim gave the Birds a 3-2 win. Mike Olt cracked two homers, a solo shot in the fourth and another in the seventh, to provide the offense in regulation for the Pelicans against starter David Hale, who tossed eight terrific innings. Lynchburg got two unearned runs in the second without the benefit of a hit against Birds starter Justin Grimm. Grimm tossed seven innings, allowing only the two unearned runs. Trevor Hurley posted zeroes in the eighth and ninth before Joe Ortiz pulled a Houdini act to get out of jams in the tenth, 11th and 12th innings. The winning rally started with two outs in the 12th when Santiago Chirino doubled against Mike Lamm, who was in his fourth inning of relief. Travis Adair was intentionally walked and after Jared Prince walked on four pitches, the southpaw Crim entered for Lamm to face the lefty Clark. Clark got ahead in the count 2-0 and 3-1 before fouling off a pitch to make it 3-2. The payoff was outside and low, forcing in Chirino with the game-winner.

DOES ANYONE WANNA WIN THIS THING': The Carolina League Southern Division second-half title has been up for grabs, but all three contenders have struggled recently. Winston-Salem has dropped seven out of their last ten, but they still hold a half-game lead on Kinston, who has lost five of seven. The Pelicans have had a chance to earn a double-half title, but they've dropped five of eight and eight of 13 and sit three and a half games back with 11 to play. The Carolina League postseason kicks off in less than two weeks and the Pelicans will host the first game of the Southern Division Championship Series on Wednesday, September 7 by virtue of their first-half division title. Their opponent is yet to be determined and will be whoever wins the second-half crown or, if the Pelicans come back to win the division again, the club that finishes second to Myrtle Beach.

TWO MARCHES TO HISTORY: Two Carolina League records came closer to falling last night. Jared Prince was hit by a pitch in the first inning, his 28th of the season, putting him two shy of the league mark of 30, set last year by Winston-Salem's Seth Loman. Prince is on pace to finish the season with 30.4 HBP's, so the record chase will come down to the wire. Also in last night's Birds victory, Joey Terdoslavich's double in the third was the Lynchburg slugger's 50th two-bagger of the season. The switch-hitter is the fourth Carolina Leaguer in history to reach the 50-double plateau and he's one shy of tying Woody Fair's 65-year-old record of 51, set with the Durham Bulls in 1946. The other two with exactly 50 doubles were Carlos Lee, who did it in 1997 with Winston-Salem, and Lawrence "Crash" Davis of the 1948 Durham Bulls

WHERE'S THE D' For most of the season, the Pelicans were the Carolina League's top defensive club. through the season's first 71 games, the Birds only committed 60 errors. Over the next 57 contests though, they made 69 errors. This 43 percent increase has dropped Myrtle Beach from the league's top spot on the defensive leaderboard to fourth behind Frederick, Kinston and Salem.
