MYRTLE BEACH, SC (JUNE 9, 2010) - Myrtle Beach scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and beat the Dash 3-2 on Wednesday night at BB&T Coastal Field. The Pelicans earned the series sweep with the win and spoiled an outstanding outing by Winston-Salem starting pitcher Terry Doyle.
The Dash did not lose any ground in the first half race for the Southern Division title, as Salem lost to Lynchburg 6-2 on Wednesday. The Red Sox' loss lowered Winston's magic number to eight to clinch the division.
Doyle, the reigning Carolina League "Pitcher of the Week," took the mound opposite of Randall Delgado, who has been one of the league's best pitchers all season. After allowing a leadoff single to Cole Miles in the bottom of the first inning, Doyle began one of the most impressive stretches for any Dash pitcher all season. The right-hander retired the next 18 batters, a span that lasted until the seventh inning.
Meanwhile, Winston-Salem (38-22) could not do much against Delgado, who faced the minimum through four innings. The Dash left the bases loaded in the fifth inning, but finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth.
Brandon Short led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He scored when Jon Gilmore singled to right, giving Winston the 1-0 lead.
The Dash added another in the top of the eighth when David Francis loaded the bases with one out. Seth Loman grounded to third base, but Dan Nelson inexplicably threw to get a force out at second, allowing Short to score from third and putting Winston-Salem up 2-0. Logan Johnson struck out to end the inning, leaving two baserunners aboard.
After his streak of 18 straight Pelicans (22-38) retired ended the inning before, Doyle got the first man he faced in the eighth. He then struck out Jesus Sucre, but a wild pitch on the third strike allowed Sucre to reach first base. Calvin Culver followed with a single to right to put runners on first and second with one out.
Joe McEwing then decided to remove Doyle, who had thrown about 85 pitches at that point in the game, in favor of his closer, Gregory Infante. Luis Sumoza greeted Infante with a grounder to deep third base. Jon Gilmore hesitated after backhanding the ball and did not make a throw, loading the bases. L.V. Ware hit an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in the Pelicans' first run and advance two men into scoring position with two outs.
With the ballgame on the line, Miles drove a ball into right field for a single, scoring Culver and Sumoza to give Myrtle Beach a 3-2 lead.
The Dash put a man on with one out in the top of the ninth, but Paul Clemens retired Drew Garcia and Justin Greene to end the game and send Winston-Salem to its third straight defeat.
Clemens was credited with his first save, preserving the win for Francis (1-3).
Infante (1-1) blew his second save of the season and suffered the loss after allowing one run on two hits in 0.2 innings. Doyle did not get a decision, giving up two runs on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
Winston was swept for the first time all year, doing so against the team with the worst record in the Carolina League. After starting the season 15-7 on the road, the Dash has lost nine of its last 12 away from BB&T Ballpark.
The Dash hopes to return to form when it returns to the Twin City on Thursday night to start a four-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks. RHP Nevin Griffith (4-1, 2.77) gets the start for Winston against RHP Alex Caldera (5-3, 2.92). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the audio webcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
