Potomac Nationals News Release

(WOODBRIDGE, VA) Ross Detwiler will make his first step back toward the big leagues tonight in Woodbridge with a rehab appearance against the Frederick Keys. The Nationals' first-round pick in 2007, Detwiler had hip surgery in January. The lefthander plans to make one start with Potomac before joining the Harrisburg Senators in AA.

After a dominant 2007 season at Missouri State in which he struck out 100 in 89 innings, the Nationals made Detwiler the sixth overall pick in the Amateur Draft. He launched his professional career with four starts for the Gulf Coast League Nationals, then joined the P-Nats for five appearances.

That same season, Detwiler's big league dreams came true. On 7 September 2007, he made his major-league debut, pitching one hitless inning in relief against the Atlanta Braves, striking out one. He became the first player drafted in the 2007 Draft to appear in a major-league game.

Detwiler was a big part of the 2008 Mills Cup Champion P-Nats. In 26 starts, he was 8-8 with a 4.86 ERA. He struck out 114 in 124 innings.

Detwiler opened the 2009 season with the Harrisburg Senators of the Class AA Eastern League. When Scott Olsen was injured, Detwiler was called up to make his first MLB start on May 18 against the Pirates. He went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs, striking out 6.

In 2009, Ross made 14 starts for the big league club; he went 1-6 with a 5.00 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 75.2 innings.
