THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg let go of a late lead for the third straight game in a 10-6 loss at Salem in 11 innings last night... The Hillcats have now followed a season-high five-game winning streak with a six-game losing skid, which is the longest this season by the Cats...Tonight the Hillcats play the final game of a three-game series at Salem and the last contest of seven in a row on the road...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 5-7 against the Red Sox thus far this season and are 1-5 at Memorial Ballpark...The Cats went 10-10 against the Sox in the 460 series last season and were 5-5 at Lewis Gale Field...In the post-season the Cats swept the Sox three games to none in the Mills Cup Championship...In the all-time series Salem leads 162-142 during the regular season...
ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY: RHP Edinson Volquez is scheduled to start for the Hillcats on Saturday night in a rehabilitation start...In 2008 he was the Reds' lone representative in the National League All-Star game...He was 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA with 206 strikeouts in 196 innings...The righty last threw June 1, 2009 for the Reds against St. Louis...He missed the rest of last season and had elbow reconstructive surgery August 3...Volquez was 4-2, with a 4.35 ERA in nine starts with Cincinnati last year...On April 20, Volquez was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program...His suspension ends Sunday, and he will be pitching under a rehab assignment while under suspension...
HAVEN'T WE DONE THIS BEFORE? Lynchburg is at the tail end of 13 games in a row that are all against Salem and Frederick...They just played six at home against the two teams (three against each squad, going 5-1) and now are on the road to play seven games (four in Frederick and three at Salem, thus far 0-6) at the Keys and Sox home parks...The Hillcats began the season with 14 games against only Salem and Frederick as well and they will have a similar stretch at the end of July...
USE BOTH HANDS: Last night the Hillcats relinquished three separate leads for the third straight game...The were up 3-1, 5-3 and 6-5 in their 10-6 loss in extra-innings last night...Lynchburg had a two-run lead entering the ninth inning and a one-run advantage heading into the bottom of the 11th...On Monday night they led 1-0, 2-1 and 4-2 entering the ninth inning a night ago before eventually falling 5-4 thanks to three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning by the Red Sox...On Sunday in Frederick they were up 2-0 after a half an inning, up 3-2 after an inning and a half and led 5-3 heading into the sixth inning losing the lead again...Last night was Lynchburg's 19th blown lead this season in 59 games...
SO CLOSE, BUT SO FAR AWAY: The Hillcats were one out away from the win last night before the Red Sox rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning...They were two outs away from the win in the bottom of the 11th inning as well before blowing the lead...On Monday night Lynchburg was two outs away from a win before they lost the lead...On Sunday they were up a run and four outs from a victory before falling in Frederick...Last night marked the second straight game Lynchburg has lost when entering the ninth inning with a lead (both times it was with a two-run advantage), after they started the season 17-0 when leading after eight innings...The Cats now have nine saves on the season and after their two blown saves last night, they now have ten blown saves on the season...

STRAINING THE BRAIN: Last night RHP Nick Christiani gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to blow the save opportunity...He had not allowed a run in 15 innings after he tossed a scoreless eighth inning last night...In his time with Lynchburg the right-hander had only given up one run in 18 and 2/3 innings of action prior to a night ago and had not given up a run since May 11th...
GLUE GUY: RHP Jordan Hotchkiss made his third straight start last night and allowed two runs in a season-high five innings of work...He was in line for the victory until the Red Sox rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning...Hotchkiss has now started (0-0, 2.25 ERA in three starts), pitched in middle relief (a team-high three holds) and tossed a the back end of the pen (five games finished)...If he qualified for the league leaders (11 and 2/3 innings short), he would lead the Carolina League in earned run average (1.80)...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: Caleb Clay was selected by Boston in the supplemental first round of the 2006 draft straight out of high school in Alabama...He made his professional debut in 2007 with the Short Season Low-A Lowell Spinners and went 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA in five starts...He suffered an injury that season and had to have Tommy John surgery that kept him out for most of 2008...He did make two starts with the GCL Red Sox and he did not allow a run in two and 2/3 innings of work...Last season he pitched for full season Low-A Greenville and went 6-7 with a 4.01 ERA in 25 games (16 starts) for the Drive...This year he has progressed to Advanced-A and with Salem has gone 2-3 with a 4.18 ERA and one save in 11 games (10 starts)...In his only start against Lynchburg he allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings of action in a no-decision...
