Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Early offense and a career-high seven innings from Brad Boxberger (pictured) brought an end to Lynchburg's season-long seven-game losing streak with a 6-2 win in Salem. The Hillcats return home on Thursday night for the first game of a seven-game homestand and the series opener of a four-game set with Potomac at 7:05 p.m. at City Stadium.
Lynchburg grabbed the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Alex Buchholz hit his fourth homer in his last nine games to give the Green & Gold a 2-0 advantage. In the third inning three more runs came across for the Hillcats. The first run was driven in on with an RBI double by Josh Fellhauer and the next two cam across on a throwing error to make it a 5-0 game.
Salem got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mitch Dening smacked a lead-off triple and scored later in the inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Oscar Tejeda. Lynchburg answered with a run in the top of the seventh to put the lead back to five. Carlos Mendez came through with an RBI single in the frame.
The Red Sox brought in another run in the eighth inning with an RBI single by Tejeda and were threatening for more. With the bases loaded and only one out, Donnie Joseph entered the game and struck out back-to-back batters to escape the jam and keep the Cats up 6-2.
The win went to Brad Boxberger (4-5), who tossed a career-high seven innings to pick up his fourth victory of the season and his first win since May 3rd. The save was notched by Joseph (1) for Lynchburg (25-35). The loss went to starter Caleb Clay (3-3) for Salem (35-25).
The Hillcats return home for the first game of a seven-game homestand and the first contest of a four-game series with Potomac at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night at City Stadium. Right-hander Mark Serrano (2-3) will get the nod for the Cats opposite lefty Evan Bronson (1-4, 3.95) for the Nationals. Tune-in for all the live action on 105.5 FM KD Country.
