Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Wilmington, DE - Winston-Salem's offense was non-existent in Wilmington's doubleheader sweep of the Dash on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium. The Blue Rocks nearly tossed a no-hitter before claiming a 5-1 win in the opener and Eduardo Paulino worked a complete game shutout in Wilmington's 1-0 victory in the nightcap.

The Blue Rocks pitching staff has held the Dash to two runs on eight hits (seven singles) in winning the first three games of this four-game series. Wilmington has won 16 of their last 17 games and now leads the Northern Division by 2.5 games over Potomac.

The opener was dominated by a pair of Wilmington hurlers who kept the Dash hitless for 5.2 innings. Blue Rocks starting pitcher Danny Gutierrez tossed four hitless frames and limited Winston-Salem to a walk with three strikeouts before turning the no-hit bid over to Carlos Rivas. The Wilmington reliever worked a perfect fifth before surrendering an infield single to Dash left fielder Tyler Kuhn with two outs in the sixth inning.

Dash starter Levi Maxwell, who ironically tossed a no-hitter against Wilmington on June 19 in game one of a doubleheader at Frawley Stadium, kept the game scoreless until running into trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jamar Walton and Ryan Eigsti led off with singles and Chase Fontaine walked to load the bases with no outs. Next, Derrick Robinson hit a chopper that bounced off the glove of Dash shortstop Greg Paiml and trickled in center field. The error allowed two runs to score. One batter later, Mike Moustakes drilled a two-run double to deep center field to give the Blue Rocks a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, Eric Hosmer added an RBI double to extend Wilmington's advantage to five.

The Dash avoided being shutout when they plated their lone run in the top of the seventh inning. Dale Mollenhauer led off with a walk and a pair of Rivas wild pitches advanced him to third base. Two outs later, Joe Persichina lined a run-scoring double that popped out of the glove of a diving Derrick Robinson in center field. It was Winston-Salem second and final hit of the game.

Rivas (4-3) worked the final three innings and allowed a run on two hits to collect the win. Maxwell (4-12) allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits in 4.1 innings to suffer his league-leading 12th loss of the season.

The nightcap was also dominated by pitching as Dylan Axelrod, who was making his Carolina League debut for Winston-Salem, and Paulino matched each other with scoreless frames until Wilmington scratched across a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Anthony Seratelli led off with a bunt single and Derrick Robinson reached on a sacrifice bunt when Axelrod's throw to second base trailed the runner. Another sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third and Moustakes was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Reliever Charlis Burdie entered for Axelrod and surrendered an RBI sacrifice fly to Clint Robinson that plated Seratelli with the game's lone run.

Paulino (7-6) was dominate in tossing his first career complete game shutout without walking a batter and striking out eight. He limited the Dash to three hits. Axelrod (0-1) suffered the tough-luck loss after holding Wilmington to one run on four hits.

The Dash and Blue Rocks will conclude this series with their final meeting of the regular season on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium. Winston-Salem will hand the ball to RHP Anthony Carter (10-5, 4.17), while Wilmington is expected to start RHP Alex Caldera (4-9, 5.78). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The Dash returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Tuesday, August 18 when they open a four-game, three-day series with a doubleheader against the Potomac Nationals. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. For more information on all the upcoming promotions or to purchase single-game tickets, visit www.wsdash.com or by call the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
