Kinston Indians News Release

The K-Tribe scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but the comeback came up short as Kinston dropped a 6-5 decision to Lynchburg. The Wednesday night loss ended Kinston's season high seven game win streak.

The Indians took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Tim Fedroff singled and Cord Phelps drove him home with an RBI single. With the hit Fedroff reached base for the 31st consecutive game, the second longest streak in the Carolina League this season. Only Frederick's Caleb Johnson owns a longer streak, a 32 gamer that ended in the middle of July. Kinston extended the lead in the top of the third inning scoring two runs thanks to an Ole Sheldon RBI groundout and a Lynchburg error.

With Kinston up 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Hillcats clawed their way back, loading the bases on K-Tribe reliever David Roberts. Lynchburg's Chase d'Arnaud cleared the bases with a double down the line, that just got under the glove of Kinston third baseman Adam Davis. Lynchburg would extend their lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, when d'Arnaud hit a two-run home run off of Kinston's Dallas Cawiezell.

The insurance runs proved important, as Kinston tried to keep the win streak going in the top of the ninth inning. Ronald Rivas doubled to begin the inning and was driven in on a two-out, RBI single by Lucas Montero. Montero then scored on an RBI by Fedroff, cutting the Lynchburg deficit to one run. With Fedroff on second base, Cord Phelps was called out on strikes to end the game and the win streak.

Montero matched a season high with three hits, going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Fedroff, Phelps, Pickens and Rivas each had two hits for Kinston. Russell Young put together another strong start for Kinston, giving up one run on seven hits in five innings. Roberts (0-4) took the loss for the K-Tribe.

Kinston takes on Lynchburg in the final game of this three game series Thursday night in Virginia. Mike McGuire will get the start for Kinston, game time 7:05 pm.
