Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Salem, VA - Salem took advantage of sloppy Dash defense to rout Winston-Salem 12-3 on Saturday night at Lewis-Gale Field. The Dash committed a season-high four errors which led to six unearned runs as the Red Sox scored 12 unanswered to even this three-game series at a game apiece.

The Dash jumped in front quickly with three runs in the top of the first inning off Salem starting pitcher Dave McKae. Consecutive singles by Dale Mollenhauer, Greg Paiml and Jimmy Gallagher loaded the bases with no outs. Salvador Sanchez brought Mollenhauer home with a ground out and a throwing error on the play allowed Paiml to cross the plate. Third baseman Brent Morel followed with an RBI double to give Winston-Salem a 3-0 lead. The Dash would not score the rest of the game.

Salem countered with four unearned runs off Dash starter Levi Maxwell in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Kris Negron bounced a grounder back to the mound that Maxwell gloved cleanly, but his throw to first sailed into right field and allowed Negron to reach second. After a Mike Jones single put runners on the corners, Jason Place followed with an RBI single. One out later, Che-Hsuan Lin smacked a three-run home run to put Salem in front 4-3. It was the first home run of the season for Lin, who finished the game with five RBI after entering the contest with five RBI in his first 29 games.

Maxwell's struggles continued in the third inning as the Red Sox extended their advantage to 7-3. After walks to Place and Lin, Jered Stanley delivered an RBI single. Maxwell walked Aaron Reza to load the bases with two outs and Matt Sheely hit a fly ball into short left field that bounced off the glove of shortstop Greg Paiml. Instead of ending the inning, the error allowed two more Red Sox runs to score.

Salem added two more runs with a two-out rally against Dash reliever Kevin Asselin in the sixth inning. Place and Luis Exposito collected consecutive RBI base hits to extend the Red Sox advantage to 9-3. Three more Salem runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Lin, would send the Dash to their largest defeat of the season.

McKae (1-1) settled down after a rough first inning and used the run support to collect his first win of the season. He matched his season-high with six innings pitched while holding the Dash to three runs on seven hits. Maxwell (0-6) only lasted three innings and surrendered seven runs (one earned) on five hits to suffer the loss. He has lost all six of his starts this season.

These two teams will conclude this three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Gale Field. Winston-Salem will hand the ball to RHP Johnnie Lowe (2-1, 3.96), while the Red Sox will turn to RHP Eammon Portice (2-3, 4.04). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

The Dash will begin a seven-game home stand on Monday, May 18 with the first of four against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at 7 p.m. Single-game tickets are also available for games at Wake Forest Baseball Park through June 17 and can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
