Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem Dash fell 7-5 in Sunday's matinee matchup with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, splitting the series homestand 3-3.
Jersey Shore opened the scoring in the top of the first courtesy of a solo homer from Kendall Simmons to left center field. Kohl Simas walked a pair and hit a batter in the second, and BlueClaws' Marcus Lee Sang knocked a ground ball single to third to tack on another run.
Simas cruised to a 1-2-3 third with two strikeouts, and the Dash picked up some momentum in the bottom of the inning. Despite putting runners on first and second with one out, though, Winston-Salem couldn't cash in and remained scoreless.
In total, Simas went five innings of four-hit, 2-run ball and struck out four. The Dash couldn't manage much offense behind him, however, and remained scoreless with just two hits through 5.
Hunter Dollander entered in relief for the top of the sixth. He issued back-to-back walks to lead off the inning and surrendered a 2-run double in the next at-bat to give Jersey Shore a 4-0 advantage.
With runners on second and third and no outs, Nick Ward launched a 3-run bomb off Dollander to extend the BlueClaws' lead to 7-0. Chase Plymell took over on the mound with two outs and struck out Rixon Wingrove in three pitches to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Loidel Chapelli knocked an RBI single to right field to draw the Dash within 6. Winston-Salem tacked on another two with a throwing error from shortstop Erik Brito, pulling the game to 7-3.
Plymell retired the side in order in the seventh, but the Dash went down 1-2-3 with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the inning. Plymell tossed another scoreless frame in the eighth, bringing his line to three shutout innings with just one hit on the afternoon.
The Dash got off to a hot start in the bottom of the eighth with Michael Turner and Shawn Goosenberg knocking back-to-back singles. Chapelli walked to load the bases with no outs, and Colby Smelley notched a sacrifice fly to pull the Dash within 3.
Eric Adler took the mound for the top of the ninth and made it out unscathed, bringing the top of the order up for the Dash in the bottom of the inning. With no outs and runners on the corners, Wilfred Veras batted in a run with a sacrifice fly to deep center field, cutting Jersey Shore's lead to 2.
Winston-Salem couldn't keep the momentum going, though, and fell 7-5 to split the series homestand 3-3. Simas was tabbed with the loss and Jersey Shore's Carlos Betancourt picked up the win.
The Dash return to action Tuesday for a six-game road set against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. from First National Bank Field.
