Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Frederick, MD - In a series marred by wet weather, Winston-Salem and Frederick split a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon with the Dash taking the opener 8-0 and the Keys walking-off with a 7-4 win in game two. There were two rainouts in the series and game one today was interrupted by a two-hour rain delay, but when all was said and done, Winston-Salem (14-12) was able to take three of four from Frederick (10-17).
The Dash grabbed a quick lead in the opener off Keys starting pitcher Tim Bascom. Center fielder Jordan Danks led off the game with a double and shortstop Greg Paiml followed with an RBI single to put Winston-Salem in front 1-0. The Dash added four runs in the second frame sparked by three Keys errors, a walk and two hits. Paiml, who finished with three hits, delivered the defining blow with a two-run double that extended the Dash advantage to 5-0.
Following the conclusion of the second inning, the game was delay for just over two hours due to rain. When play resumed, so did the Dash offense as designated hitter Seth Loman slapped an RBI double off Keys reliever Jake Stevens to give Winston-Salem a 6-0 lead.
Dash third baseman Brent Morel blasted a two-run home run off Andy Barb in the top of the seventh inning to finalize the scoring. Henry Mabee (3-0) took the mound for Winston-Salem after the delay and tossed a season-high four innings to earn the win. He held the Keys to five hits and two strikeouts while preserving the Dash's second shutout of the season and first since a 6-0 blanking of Kinston on April 11.
Bascom (2-3) took the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits in two innings of work. He has allowed 20 runs in 3 starts at Harry Grove Stadium this season, but only 6 have been earned. Dash starting pitcher Daniel Hudson was making his Carolina League debut and looked sharp. He retired all six batters he faced with three strikeouts, but did not take the mound after the two-hour delay.
In game two, Winston-Salem grabbed an early lead when second baseman Dale Mollenhauer lined a two-out RBI single off Keys starting pitcher Nathan Nery in the top of the second inning. Salvador Sanchez added another two-out, run-scoring hit in the third inning to extend the Dash advantage to 2-0.
After the Keys plated an unearned run in the fourth inning, the Dash added a pair of runs as
Christian Marrero and Mollenhauer registered RBI doubles off Nery in the top of the sixth inning to give Winston-Salem a 4-1 lead. The Keys rally began with a two-run home run by Billy Rowell in the sixth inning to trim the Keys deficit to one.
Frederick completed the dramatic rally against Dash closer Santo Luis in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bobby Stevens hit a two-out RBI single to knot the score at four and Kraig Binick followed with a walk-off, three-run home run to garner the Keys a doubleheader split.
Luis (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs while recording just two outs. Keys reliever Luis Lebron (1-1) pitched a scoreless inning to collect his first win of the season.
