Frederick Keys News Release

A four-run second inning doomed the Frederick Keys in game one of a double-header, as the club dropped the first contest to the Winston-Salem Dash 8-0. The Keys avoided a four-game series sweep, however, by coming from behind and deafeating the Dash in dramatic fashion in game two, 7-4.

RHP Tim Bascom got the start for Frederick in game one. He found himself in an early jam. CF Jordan Danks led the game off with a double. SS Greg Paiml drove him in with an RBI-single, making it a 1-0 lead.

The Dash extended the lead in the second. Frederick made three errors, leading to four Winston-Salem runs.

With the Dash up 5-0 after two, the game was halted due to rain. After a two-hour and four-minute delay, they resumed play.

Both starting pitchers came out of the game after the rain delay. With LHP Jake Stevens on the hill for Frederick in the third, 3B Brent Morel and DH Seth Loman both doubled, extending the Dash lead to six.

Winston-Salem would tack on two more runs in the seventh when Morel drilled a two-run homerun. RHP Henry Mabee got the win, after four shutout innings of relief. He's now 3-0. Bascom took the loss, dropping his record to 2-3.

LHP Nate Nery got the start for the Keys in game two. It was Nery's first career Carolina League start, after receiving a promotion this morning from the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds.

Winston-Salem once again jumped out to an early lead. Morel led off the second inning with a single. He then stole second and scored on 2B Dale Mollenhauer's RBI-single, making it 1-0 Dash.

Danks would lead off the third for the Dash with a double. He came around and scored on DH Salvador Sanchez's infield hit, making it a two-run Winston-Salem lead.

The Keys cut the deficit in half in the fourth. 1B Brandon Waring and RF Billy Rowell hit back-to-back singles. With one out, they attempted a double-steal. The throw to third was wild and went into left field, allowing Waring to trot home.

Winston-Salem got it back in the sixth. With one out, Morel drilled a triple to right. He scored on RF Christian Marerro's double. Marrero then scored on a Mollenhauer two-bagger, to make it 4-1 Winston-Salem.

Nery left after the sixth. He allowed four runs, all earned, on nine hits, while walking one and striking out four

The Keys pulled to within one in the bottom of the sixth. With one on and two down, Rowell drilled a two-run homer, his second of the season, to make it 4-3.

Frederick would win it in their last at bat. With one down, C Billy Killian and SS Rodolfo Cardona hit back-to-back singles. LF David Cash then grounded a ball to short. Dash SS CJ Lang was able to get the out at second, but that was it. With runners on the corners and two down, SS Bobby Stevens hit a single to right, scoring Killian, and tying the game at four.

The next batter, CF Kraig Binick came to the plate and drilled a three-run homerun. The game-winning blast was Binick's fifth long ball of the season. It gave the Keys the 7-4 win.

RHP Luis Lebron got the win for Frederick, after tossing a scoreless seventh. He's now 1-0. RHP Santo Luis took the loss. He's now 0-1.

The Keys will open up a three-game set with the Wilmington Blue Rocks tomorrow night at the stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. Fireworks will follow the game. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
