Potomac Nationals News Release
WILMINGTON, Del. - Behind an utterly dominant pitching staff and enough offense to come out on top, the P-Nats polished off a sweep of the Blue Rocks in Wilmington Thursday night, winning 2-0 on the restart of a suspended game and 1-0 behind another dominant performance from Bradley Meyers.
The suspended game resumed with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning as Clint Everts made quick work of the Blue Rock hitters needing only five pitches, all strikes, to record the final two outs of the inning.
The game would stay scoreless until the eighth inning, however, when the P-Nats were finally able to break through against Blue Rock reliever Brandon Sisk. After loading the bases with nobody out, Sisk coaxed Chris Marrero into a 4-2-3 double play. A Michael Burgess walk re-loaded the bases before Jesus Valdez, the Nationals' Mr. Clutch, blooped a two-run single in front of right fielder Jamar Walton putting the P-Nats up 2-0.
Everts (1-0) put the finishing touches on the P-Nats' sixth consecutive victory retiring Mike Moustakas with a strikeout swinging to end the ballgame.
Game two featured, what else, a pitcher's duel between Blue Rock starter Alex Caldera and P-Nats hurler Bradley Meyers who entered the game riding a 13 2/3 innings scoreless streak. Caldera (0-2) pitched brilliantly, striking out 10 in his six innings of work, his only blemish coming in the sixth inning when Brian Peacock led off the frame with a double and scored on a single by Dan Lyons.
Meyers (3-0) only needed that single tally to earn his third victory of the season as he once again shut down the Blue Rocks for seven scoreless innings, striking out a season-high eight batters while allowing only three hits. He stretched his shutout streak to 20 2/3, tops on the team in 2009.
Carlos Martinez tossed a scoreless eighth and Andrew Kown overcame two P-Nats errors in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season, getting Paulo Orlando to ground out to shortstop Danny Espinosa to end the ballgame and give the Nationals a 1-0 victory.
The P-Nats swept the Blue Rocks in this four game series, earning three shutouts in the process. In 30 innings of baseball played between the two teams, the Blue Rocks only scored in two of them, all in a 5-3 loss in the second game of the series.
In the last seven games for Potomac, their starting pitchers, not including Joe Beimel's Major League rehab effort against the Frederick Keys, have thrown 42 innings and only given up three runs in that time frame.
The P-Nats board the bus to head to Winston-Salem to begin a three-game set with the Dash beginning Friday night at 7:05 ET. You can hear all the action live at 6:45 ET on www.potomacnationals.com with Dan McGinn and Anthony Masterson.
