Kinston Indians News Release

Down to his last strike, Kinston's Matt McBride hit a two-run home run giving the Indians a 4-3 lead and eventual win over Salem in game two of Thursday night's double header. McBride smashed a two strike pitch over the left field wall with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to erase a 3-2 deficit. With two-outs in the inning, Lonnie Chisenhall sprayed a single to right to set the table from McBride's two-run bomb. Kinston ended up sweeping the Thursday night double header to end up splitting the four game series with Salem. Both teams are now tied for first place in the Carolina League Southern Division.

McBride's heroics erased the effort of Salem's Ryan Kalish, who hit a two-run home run of his own in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Kalish smash ripped a 2-1 lead away from the Indians. Kinston almost gave the game right back to Salem in the bottom of the seventh inning when a walk, bloop single and infield hit loaded the bases with no outs. K-Tribe closer Dallas Cawiezell got a shallow fly out to center, a foul out and got Salem's Jason Place to strikeout looking to preserve the win. Cawiezell got his third save of the season. K-Tribe starter Russell Young also pitched well giving up just three hits and one unearned run in five innings for the no decision. McBride's big home run also extended his hit streak to a Carolina League best 21 games. McBride was a combined 5-for-7 with six rbi in the double header, going 4-for-4 in the game one victory. McBride is now leading the Carolina League with a .421 batting average.

McBride and Lonnie Chisenhall combined for seven hits and six RBI as the K-Tribe beat Salem 7-0 in game one of Thursday's double header. McBride went 4-for-4 with three rbi and Chisenhall was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. The K-Tribe banged out 14 hits in the seven inning opening game of the double dip.

Kinston had a slim 1-0 lead going into the fifth inning until Cord Phelps, Chisenhall and McBride knocked out three consecutive two-out, RBI hits. Kinston starting pitcher Eric Berger would do the rest, giving up just two hits through six innings. Berger (3-1) walked just two hitters, while striking out four. Berger's ERA improved to 1.55, the second best in the Carolina League. Reliever Matt Meyer pitched a scoreless seventh inning, preserving Kinston's second shutout of the season.

The K-Tribe returns to Kinston Friday for a short three game homestand with Myrtle Beach, game time 7pm at Historic Grainger Stadium. Paolo Espino will start on the hill for Kinston.
