FREDERICK, MD - Joseph Daris and Tanner Murphy were both 2-for-4 with solo home runs, but the Mudcats fell behind by seven over the first two frames while losing 8-4 in the finale of a four game series in Frederick at Nymeo Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Max Povse started for the Mudcats (23-33) and took the loss after allowing a season high eight runs and season high 11 hits over six innings pitched. Lucas Long started for the Keys and allowed three runs on seven hits while earning the victory.
Povse (3-4, 3.55) gave up two runs and three hits in the first and five runs on five hits in the second. One of the five hits in the second was a three run home run by Conor Bierfeldt. The home run was just the second allowed by Povse over 11 starts this season. Povse also walked one, struck out three and pitched through the sixth on a season high 100 pitches.
Wynston Sawyer drove in the first run of the game with a RBI single in the first for the Keys (28-30). Bierfeldt then brought in the second with a sacrifice fly in the same inning and the Keys led 2-0 after one against Povse and the Mudcats. Frederick then added five runs with help of another RBI hit from Wilkerson and Bierfeldt's three run home run.
The Keys led 7-0 after the second, but the Mudcats came back with two in the third and one in the fourth while cutting the lead to 7-3. Joseph Odom brought in their first run in the third with a RBI double and Braxton Davidson followed later in the frame with a RBI single to make it 7-2. Odom was 2-for-4 with a RBI in Tuesday's loss and has hit safely in five straight games.
Daris hit a solo home run in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-3, but the Keys came back with one more run against Povse in the sixth to go up 8-3. Murphy then homered in the sixth to make it 8-4. Daris was 2-for-4 with a run and his first home run of the season in Tuesday's loss. Murphy was also 2-for-4 with a home run; the home run was his second in back-to-back days.
The Mudcats scored three of their four runs against Keys starter Lucas Long and one against reliever Cory Jones later in the game. Long (3-4, 4.17) pitched through the fifth and allowed three runs on seven hits while earning the win. Jones worked the sixth and seventh and held the Mudcats to just the one run. Tanner Scott pitched a scoreless eighth and Michael Zouzalik worked a scoreless ninth.
Carolina used only Carlos Salazar and Chase Johnson-Mullins out of the bullpen in Tuesday's game. Salazar struck out one while facing only three in seventh. The same was true for Johnson-Mullins after he came into the game in the eighth.
The Mudcats combined to hit six home runs in the series, but finished in a 2-2 split. They also finished their seven game road trip at 3-4.

The home stand begins with Thirsty Thursday and will continue with Military Appreciation Weekend beginning on Friday, June 10. The Mudcats will wear specially designed Military Appreciation jerseys throughout the weekend; those same jerseys made available for purchase through an online auction following the series.
