SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Daniel Nwaelele hit a layup off the feed from Kiwi Gardner with 3.1 seconds left in the game to seal a 102-100 victory over the Bakersfield Jam on Tuesday night in front of a capacity crowd at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Santa Cruz was led by Mychel Thompson, who scored a season-high 22 points. Cameron Jones scored 17, while Lance Goulbourne logged his sixth double-double in seven games with 16 points and a season-high 19 rebounds. Ognjen Kuzmic, currently on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, grabbed 17 boards.
Bakersfield was paced by Ike Diogu, who scored a game-high 29 points and had 11 rebounds. Jerel McNeal had a double-double off the bench with 20 points and a game-high 12 assists, while Billy Baptist pulled down 10 rebounds.
There were 13 lead changes in the game. The game was tied at 15 apiece with 3:33 left in the first quarter when Bakersfield went on a 13-3 run to pull ahead by double digits. The Warriors responded with a 10-0 run to tie the game early in the second quarter, and Santa Cruz took a three-point lead into intermission. Bakersfield led by as many as six points in the third frame, and the Jam entered the fourth quarter ahead 77-73. The Jam pushed their advantage to eight, but Santa Cruz responded and took the lead with 6:01 remaining. The game was tied at 91-91 with 3:00 left when Santa Cruz scored seven straight points, holding a 98-91 lead with 1:43 left in the game. Bakersfield tied it up at 100-100 with 10.7 seconds left, but Kiwi Gardner found Daniel Nwaelele for the game-winning bucket with 3.1 seconds remaining.
Santa Cruz won the battle of the boards (60-43) and dished out more assists (28-24). Bakersfield outshot the Warriors (42.4%-39.1%), had more steals (15-10) and committed fewer turnovers (18-22).
