Bakersfield Jam News Release
BAKERSFIELD, April 1, 2014 - Ike Diogu had a game-high 29 points to go along with 11 rebounds but the visiting Bakersfield Jam (22-26) fell short to the Santa Cruz Warriors (27-21) Tuesday night, 102-100.
In the first quarter, Bakersfield shot 52 percent from the floor, compared to Santa Cruz's 27 percent, and scored a good portion of their first quarter points in the paint (20). With a 28-21 advantage entering the second quarter, the Jam struggled to get anything going offensively as they converted on only 5-of-21 shots (23.8%) and fell behind 50-47 at the break.
Bakersfield managed to get their edge from the start of the game back in the third period as they outscored the Warriors 30-23 and went into the final frame with a four-point lead (77-73). The final 12 minutes of regulation was a battle as the Jam and the Warriors both fought hard for every possession. Down 98-91 with 1:43 left in the game, the Jam put together a quick 9-2 run and tied it at 100. However, Bakersfield's late run was cut short as Santa Cruz scored a game-winning lay-up with 03.1 seconds left. In a hard fought battle between both teams all season, Bakersfield and Santa Cruz split the season series 5-5.
Overall, the Jam shot better from the field (42.4%-39.1%) and scored more points in the paint (52-28), second chance points (20-14) and fast break points (22-8). The Warriors held the edge in rebounds (60-43) and assists (28-24).
Jerel McNeal recorded his second straight double-double with 20 points and 12 assists. Jeremy Wise finished with 18 points. Billy Baptist recorded 10 rebounds.
The Warriors were paced by Mychel Thompson (22 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 blocks) and Cameron Jones (17 points). Daniel Nwaelele and Lance Goulbourne each tallied 16 points.
Final road game of the season for Bakersfield will be tomorrow Wednesday, April 2 when they take on the Reno Bighorns at 7 p.m. PDT. The season finale comes a few days later when the Jam host the Erie Bayhawks on Saturday, April 5 at 7 p.m. PDT.
