Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Following a split of the first four games between the Winston-Salem Dash and Greensboro Grasshoppers, game five was pivotal for the Dash who were trying to secure their first series win in three weeks. Behind a dominant pitching performance and a pair of runs in the first inning, Winston-Salem took game five, 2-0, in a shortened six-inning game due to weather at Truist Stadium on Saturday night in front of 7,845 fans.
Winston-Salem (28-20) gave the ball to right hander Andrew Dalquist (1-4) who was trying to continue his dominance in the "Battle of I-40".
Dalquist had tossed seven shutout innings across two starts against Greensboro (25-23) back in the beginning of May, and in game five, it was more of the same. He stranded Tsung-Che Cheng at third in the top of the first, and the Dash offense repaid him.
With two outs, the Dash strung together three straight hits against Greensboro starter Braxton Ashcraft (0-2). DJ Gladney ripped a single back up the middle and next batter Wilfred Veras brought him home. Veras laced a double to the base of the wall in left bringing home Gladney and giving the Dash a 1-0 lead. Veras came home to score on a throwing error by Ashcraft, and Winston-Salem held a 2-0 advantage after an inning.
That was all the run support Dalquist needed. The Redondo Beach, California native picked up his second punch out of the day in the second inning stranding a runner and was nearly flawless over his final three innings of work.
He went on to retire nine of the next ten batters, punching out five more Greensboro hitters allowing only one base runner on a walk. Dalquist got through five shutout innings allowing only a pair of hits, one walk and striking out a season-high seven batters with a 2-0 lead intact.
Kade Mechals took over in the sixth, allowing two base runners putting the tying run on base. With the go-ahead run at the plate, Mechals induced a groundout of Ernny Ordonez stranding the runners.
Following the conclusion of the top of the sixth, the tarp went on the field at Truist Stadium with Winston-Salem ahead, 2-0. After a 41-minute delay, the game was called and the Dash took home the shutout victory.
Winston-Salem now leads Greensboro in the six-game series, 3-2, and try to take the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
