Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads took the opening game of their series against the Asheville Tourists, 6-5, before 2,155 fans at Historic McCormick Field on Monday night.
Down, 4-2, with two outs in the top of the fourth inning, the Crawdads (71-60, 31-30) came storming back with four runs in the frame. The rally started with a single by DH Travis Adair and a double by SS Leury Garcia, before RF Jared Prince drove both in with a two-run double off the left-center field wall, tying the game. Prince then moved to third when C Zach Zaneski struck out on a wild pitch and was able to reach base safely. 1B Jared Bolden then struck out on a wild pitch and reached first base as well, enabling Prince to charge home and Zaneski to move to second. 3B Matt West dealt the final blow with an RBI single to bring in Zaneski and put Hickory ahead, 6-4.
Asheville (65-66, 36-26) pulled a run closer with an unearned tally in the bottom of the fourth, but then RHP Neil Ramirez (10-8) struck out the side in the fifth before retiring three straight in the sixth. He retired one in the seventh, before giving way to RHP Johan Yan, who loaded the bases with only one away. Yan then induced a low liner to 2B Jonathan Roof, who made the grab right before it was about to land and then fired it behind the runner at first to turn the inning-ending double play.
LHP Joseph Ortiz took over for the eighth and ninth, retiring all six in a row to close the Crawdads 6-5 win and pick up the save. Ramirez became the first Crawdad of the season to reach 10 wins, while LHP Wes Musick (7-7) was tagged with the loss for Asheville.
