Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Lakewood, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws got a two-out infield single in the ninth inning from Kyle Lafrentz to hand the Augusta GreenJackets a 3-2 defeat in the opener of the GreenJackets final road trip of the season on Monday night from the Garden State.
Leandro Castro walked with one out in the ninth after Chris Wilson had retired six in a row when he came on to pitch in the bottom of the seventh. Michael Dabbs appeared to win the game with a double to right-center, but his drive bounced over the wall - forcing Castro to stay at third on the ground-rule double. After Anthony Hewitt struck out, Lafrentz's grounder up the middle was knocked down by Ydwin Villegas but he could do no more and Castro trotted home from third with the game-winner.
The BlueClaws trailed 2-0 with nine outs to go but loaded the bases to open the seventh off Kelvin Marte with a double, a walk and a bunt single. Dabbs' sacrifice fly put a run on the board for Lakewood and sent Marte to the showers. Wilson's first pitch to Hewitt resulted in a game-tying single down the third base line before Wilson set down the next six hitters.
Augusta took an early lead in the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Luke Anders and Tommy Joseph and extended the lead in the fourth on a solo home run from Ryan Cavan - his 16th of the year. After the Cavan blast, the GreenJackets would get just one hit and two walks the rest of the way - with double plays killing two of those threats.
Marte had two double plays turned behind him and he eliminated two other threats on pickoffs in his 6.1 innings. He scattered two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out seven. Wilson (0-2) took the loss after his 2.1 inning relief stint while Eric Massingham (5-2) threw three scoreless innings of one-hit ball for the BlueClaws to get the win.
Andy Reichard (4-1, 3.50) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in the second game of the series and will face Brody Colvin (6-7, 3.28). First pitch from Lakewood will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com .
