Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads never got a chance to attempt another of their late-game comebacks, dropping the final game of their four-game series with the West Virginia Power, 8-1, in five innings at Appalachian Power Park in West Virginia on a rainy Monday afternoon. The Crawdads split the series and remain in first place in the Northern Division.

The Crawdads (32-20) got on the board first against West Virginia starter RHP Jason Erickson (4-3, 3.35 ERA) in the third inning. C Leonel De Los Santos led off with a bloop double to right and advanced to third on a groundout by CF Joe Bonadonna. SS Leury Garcia then singled up the middle to score De Los Santos and give the 'Dads a 1-0 lead.

The Power (24-27) responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame against Hickory starter Joe Wieland (4-3, 4.06 ERA). With one out in the inning, SS Benji Gonzalez tripled down the right field line and scored on an infield single by CF Evan Chambers. 1B Aaron Baker then singled up the middle to put runners on the corners with two outs for RF David Rubinstein, who doubled down the line in right to plate both Chambers and Baker to put West Virginia on top, 3-1.

The Power added two more in the top of the fourth. LF Rogelios Noris led the inning off with the first of two home runs to left field. One out later, DH Jose Hernandez singled to right and moved to second on a groundout by Benji Gonzalez. Chambers then singled to left, scoring Hernandez from second, but Chambers was thrown out at second trying to stretch his single into a double to end the inning with the 'Dads trailing, 5-1.

West Virginia extended its lead to seven in the fifth. 2B Jarek Cunningham led things off with a single to left. After Wieland induced a fly-out and strikeout, C Ramon Cabrera smacked a double off the wall in left to bring in Cunningham from first. Noris followed Cabrera with his second home run of the afternoon, a two-run shot to right, his first multi-homer game of the season, to put the Power up, 8-1.

After a 33 minute rain delay, following the completion of the fifth inning, the game was called by umpires Tim Rosso and Shea Gipson, with West Virginia coming away with the 8-1 victory.

Wieland took the loss for Hickory, giving up eight runs on 11 hits while striking out four in five innings. Erickson picked up the win for the Power, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Wieland and the Crawdads are now both 0-2 in rain-shortened games this season.
