Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets dropped a 4-3 decision to the Asheville Tourists in a game completed from Sunday before winning 7-1 in their regularly scheduled Memorial Day contest at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The teams dodged the rain all day long as the scheduled resumption of Sunday's game was delayed nearly an hour and a half by rain. When the game resumed with the Tourists leading 3-2, Augusta quickly tied things with a double steal in the fifth inning. That didn't last long though, as the Tourists took the lead for good at 4-3 on a bases loaded walk from Irving in the sixth inning.
Augusta's late rallies were killed by double plays in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Going back to Sunday's start of the contest, the Tourists turned four double plays in the win.
Irving (2-1) takes the loss after firing 2.1 innings on Monday after the resumption. He allowed a run on one hit and three walks with three strikeouts. Leuris Gomez (2-2) got the win for Asheville, tossing 3.1 innings of one-run baseball. He allowed four hits, struck out four and didn't walk anyone. Sheng-An Kuo allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the season.
In the regularly scheduled contests, the GreenJackets got a complete game from Jorge Bucardo in a 7-1 win. Bucardo (4-2) allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts in his fourth win in the month of May and his third at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Bucardo also became the second GreenJacket pitcher and just the fourth in the entire league to fire a complete game this year.
After Asheville struck in the first, the GreenJackets fired back with seven unanswered runs. Hector Sanchez drilled a two-out solo home run - his third of the year - to tie things at one in the second inning. Ryan Cavan doubled home a run in the third inning and scored later on an infield fly that dropped to make things 3-1.
Augusta added to their lead with an Evan Crawford RBI triple in the fourth before the rains came again and halted play for nearly 40 minutes. When things resumed, the GreenJackets added three more runs in the fifth on RBI hits by Daniel Cook and Evan Crawford with the third scoring on Asheville's third error of the game. Juan Gonzalez lasted just three innings for Asheville in the loss, allowing three runs, but only two earned. Gonzalez (2-1) yielded four hits and a walk while striking out one.
The Jackets will be away from Lake Olmstead Stadium for over a week as they embark on an eight-game road trip on Tuesday. BJ Salsbury (4-3, 3.61) will square off against Rome righty Robinson Lopez (2-2, 2.63). First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 2:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
