Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â The Anchorage Aces begin their longest (and final) homestand of the season with Friday and Saturday night rematches against the Idaho Steelheads at Sullivan Arena.
Anchorage (12-39-2 overall) has dropped seven in a row overall and 13 of its last 14 on the road but will play its next 11 games at home. The Aces completed their second 0-6 road trip in two months with a 7-5 loss to first-place Idaho Sunday night at the Bank of America Centre, where Anchorage finished 0-8 this year. The Steelheads also beat the Aces 9-5 Friday and 4-3 Saturday to run their record against the Aces to 13-1 this season. Anchorage will prepare for its weekend series against Idaho with Wednesday and Thursday practices at Ben Boeke Arena from 10:00-11:30 a.m.
Yvan Corbin, whose streaks of 10 consecutive games with at least a point and seven with a goal ended Friday in Boise, scored his league-leading 34th goal of the year during Sunday's loss and shares the overall WCHL scoring lead with Dean Larson at 64 points. Larson scored his first goal in 11 games (and his 22nd of the year) Saturday and ranks second in the league with 42 assists. Kimbi Daniels scored twice and assisted on another goal Sunday to move into a tie for 15th in the scoring race with 43 points (15g-28a). The Aces have lost 18 of their last 20 games and have surrendered seven or more goals in 11 of those defeats.
The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau will be holding its annual "Night at the Aces" during Friday's 7:00 p.m. game, with special group pricing for all ACVB members. All fans 18 years of age or older will be eligible for a trip to Hawaii that will be given away during the course of Saturday's game, which also begins at 7:00 p.m. In addition, Xpress Lube will be presenting jersey shirts to the first 750 fans aged 14 & under while all fans will receive free tans, courtesy of Sun Splash.
The team will be holding its annual Dimond Center "Skate with the Aces" Sunday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. All players currently on the Anchorage roster will be available for autographs and photos, and admission is free with a ticket stub from one of the weekend games versus Idaho. The homestand continues early next week with Tuesday and Wednesday night contests at 7:00 p.m. against the Fresno Falcons. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
The Aces will be active in the "Skate into Reading" program throughout the week leading up to their weekend games with Idaho. Daniels and goaltender Christian Soucy will be among six players appearing at Russian Jack Elementary tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Corbin, Larson, and Paul Williams will be part of the six-player contingent heading to Creekside Elementary Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Trailside Elementary will be attending Friday's pre-game skate at Ben Boeke, which runs from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Students will have an opportunity to tour the Aces' locker room as well as the Zamboni.
Looking ahead, Anchorage will be holding its third annual "Guns & Hoses" game prior to the Aces' Saturday, March 8 tilt with the Long Beach Ice Dogs. The "Guns & Hoses" game, which matches the Anchorage Fire Department with the Anchorage Police Department, has been scheduled for 4:00 p.m., with the Aces' game to follow at 7:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at your local fire station or the APD. Admission is free to the "Guns & Hoses" game with a paid admission to that night's Aces-Ice Dogs contest, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the American Diabetes Association. Last year, the "Guns & Hoses" game drew more than 2,500 fans to Sullivan Arena and helped raise more than $10,000 for the American Red Cross.
