Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
DUNEDIN, FL - A seesaw game ended in a one-run victory for the Lakeland Flying Tigers (50-75), 9-8, over the Dunedin Blue Jays (55-73) in the series opener at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Anthony Alford went 2-for-3 in the contest with two runs, two RBI, a triple and two walks.
It was Dunedin taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Alford walked, stole second and scored on a groundout.
In the third, Lakeland set the tone for the slugfest by plating three runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Raph Rhymes and Curt Powell had RBI doubles in the inning.
The lumber went to work for Dunedin in the middle innings as the club scored twice in each the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. Andy Fermin doubled and scored in the fourth and Alford would later drive Derrick Loveless home on a single.
In the fifth it was Christian Lopes' turn to provide some fireworks. Lopes blasted a two-run homer into the trees beyond the fence in left field for two runs. Alford continued a stellar evening in the sixth by driving in Mike Reeves on a triple, Alford then scored on an Ian Parmley sacrifice fly.
After falling behind 9-7 after eight innings, three base knocks in the ninth brought the D-Jays back to within one run, 9-8, of Lakeland, but that is close as they would get. Lopes picked up his third RBI of the game in the frame on a single.
Tyler Ford earned his first win for the Flying Tigers, going two and a third innings and Whit Mayberry locked down his fourth win. Griffin Murphy suffered the loss for Dunedin.
The D-Jays and Flying Tigers will do it again tomorrow, Friday, August 28th for the middle game of the three-game set. Conor Fisk will be tabbed as Dunedin's starter against Brennan Smith of Lakeland. The first pitch is set for 6:30PM.
