PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 27, 2015) - The Palm Beach Cardinals narrowly avoided blowing a 6-0 lead and held on to beat the St. Lucie Mets 8-6 on Thursday at Tradition Field.
With the victory, the Cardinals officially eliminated the Mets from playoff contention.
Despite belting out 15 hits, the Mets came up short as starter Miller Diaz failed to limit the Cardinals in the early going.
Palm Beach scored six runs over the first three innings in part because of five walks, a balk, a wild pitch, a passed ballsand six hits allowed by Diaz, who only lasted 2.2 innings.
The Mets immediately responded on offense by knocking Cardinals starter Nick Petree out in the bottom have of the third. The first six Mets reached base and produced four runs to cut the deficit to 6-4. Victor Cruzado, Jeff McNeil, Dominic Smith and Stefan Sabol had run-scoring hits.
David Roseboom and Kelly Secrest combined to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard for 4.1 innings. Smith brought the Mets within a run of the lead in the seventh on a towering solo home run.
However, the Cardinals got the run back in the eighth against Mike Hepple when Mason Katz beat out a potential inning-ending double play to bring in a run. Palm Beach added another run in the ninth with the help of an error to go up 8-5.
The Mets didn't go quietly in the ninth. Smith beat out a potential game-ending double play to drive in a run to make it 8-6. Sabol followed with an infield single and got on base as the tying run. The rally ended when Josh Lucas came out of the bullpen to strike Amed Rosario out to end the game.
Cruzado and Matt Oberste each went 3 for 5. Smith, Sabol, Phil Evans and McNeil collected two hits apiece. Smith registered three RBI, bringing his FSL-leading total to 78.
