D.C. United News Release
Loudoun County, VA - D.C. United have re-signed goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr., through the 2020 season. Edwards originally joined the Black-and-Red from Orlando City SC on Dec. 19, 2018.
"Earl impressed us in his first season with the club and we're excited to re-sign him ahead of the 2020 season," Dave Kasper, D.C. United General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations, said. "He has the size, athleticism and shot-stopping ability to be a good goalkeeper in this league. At 27-years-old, he is still young as a professional goalkeeper and we look forward to him continuing to develop and improve in 2020."
Last season, Edwards did not appear for the D.C. United First Team but made 16 appearances for the Black-and-Red's USL Championship affiliate, Loudoun United FC. Edwards recorded 59 saves and had three clean sheets in 2019. The goalkeeper recorded his first clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on March 31, 2019 in his debut for the USL Championship side.
During his four years in Orlando, Edwards made six total MLS appearances after making his debut for the club on Oct. 22, 2017. In his five starts in 2018, Edwards made 16 saves, including three in the 2-1 win over Toronto FC on July 14. Edwards was selected 43rd overall by Orlando in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft and spent the majority of the 2017 season with Orlando City B, where he made USL All-League Second Team following a successful 2017 USL campaign where he recorded nine clean sheets in 26 games.
Edwards was a three-year team captain at UCLA, where he was named to the first team All-Pac-12 twice. Edwards was also a member of the U.S. team at the U-17 World Cup in 2009 and was a part of the U.S. U-17 National Team Residency Program from Aug. 2007 to Dec. 2009.
