Danville Otterbots News Release
Burlington, NC - The Braves were able to beat the Burlington Royals on Saturday night by a score of 9-2. Chase Larsson and Brandon Drury each hit homeruns in the game to help the D-Braves win their second straight. David Filak pitched six strong innings and earned his first win in a Danville uniform in 2011.
The Braves scored in five of the first six innings of Saturday night's game. Both teams were able to score a run a piece in the first inning of the contest. Errors by Michael Antonio and pitcher, Angel Baez, allowed the D-Braves to draw first blood. In the bottom half of the first, the Royals scored on an Antonio groundout. Lane Adams came across the plate to tie the game at one.
In the second, Chad Comer advanced to third on a wild pitched after he doubled to right field. Kurt Fleming drove the catcher in on a line drive single to center. Fleming's 17th run batted in of the season gave the Braves a 2-0 lead.
Chase Larsson led off the third inning with a walk. Larsson, who was batting in the two hole for the first time this season, scored when Brandon Drury homered to left field. The homerun was Drury's eighth of the season. The Braves owned a 4-1 lead.
The fourth inning was the only inning out of the first six that the D-Braves did not score. Nick Ahmed led off the fifth with a single. After Larsson walked yet again, the Braves pulled off a double steal of third and second base. The Royals intentionally walked Billy Beckwith to get to Sam Munson. Munson had beaten the Royals on Friday with three hits including a double and a triple. Last night, Munson singled to left to score two runs and make it a 6-1 ball game.
The Royals replaced Baez to start the sixth with David Middendorf. Middendorf didn't look much better. With two runners on and one out, Larsson drilled his seventh homerun of the season. The three run homer went well over the right field wall and the Braves had an eight run cushion with a 9-1 lead.
Filak gave up a single to Lane Adams in the bottom of the first and then proceeded to retire the next 13 batters he faced. Jin-Ho Shin broke up his streak with a single in the bottom of the fifth, but Filak then was able to get the next five batters he faced out consecutively. Filak went six innings and gave up just one run on two hits with six strikeouts. Filak's performance earned him his first win with Danville.
Matt Suschak, who joined the team on Friday, replaced Filak to start the seventh inning. He allowed one hit over his one inning of work. Wilson Rivera pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run on three hits while striking out two.
Danville goes for the sweep at 6:00 pm on Sunday night. The team will have a day off on Monday and then return home on Tuesday, August 16 to face the Princeton Rays.
