Burlington Sock Puppets News Release
Burlington, NC- After two rain delays, Sunday night's game was called, with the Danville Braves beating the Burlington Royals 10-2 in seven innings. William Beckwith hit three home runs in the ballgame and is the first player in the Appalachian League to complete the feat. The Royals are swept for the second straight home series. Burlington starter Matt Ridings, who was the league's pitcher of the week last week, takes the loss, after allowing five runs on seven hits in two innings.
The Braves put up four runs in the first inning, batting around against Ridings. A two run home run from Beckwith, in addition to an RBI double and single, put up four scores. In the third, Beckwith struck again, homering to center for his second of the night. After two scoreless innings, the Braves did their damage on Malcom Culver. On his first pitch, Nick Ahmed knocked the ball out of the park over the left field fence. Three batters later, Beckwith did it again. The Mississippi native hit his third home run of the game to make it 9-0 in favor of the visitors.
After a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh gave Danville their 10thrun, but the Royals broke the shutout in the bottom half. Cam Connor, who originally reached on an error, scored on a sacrifice fly from Jose Rodriguez to make it a 10-1 ballgame. The next batter, Michael Antonio, doubled to left, scoring Lane Adams from first, Burlington's second run.
The Royals failed to capitalize twice with the bases loaded, with Jorge Bonifacio grounding out twice, once into a double play, to end both threats. The game was called with two outs and a man on second in the top of the eighth inning.
Ridings takes his second loss after his worst performance of the season. On the contrary, Andy Ferguson had one of his best performances of the year, coming in relief. The Arkansas native threw three and a third innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts. Malcom Culver struggled on the mound, pitching two and one third innings, and was about to be replaced on the mound when the game was called. In two and a third innings, Culver gave up four runs on five hits while fanning four batters.
Braves' starter AJ Holland went two innings, allowing one hit and two walks, but was relieved after the first rain delay of the night. Jon Cornely earns his third win after giving up just one hit in three innings. In the final two innings for Danville, Daniel Lopez gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits.
For the second straight night, Adams was the only Royal to hit more than once. The center fielder went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Cam Connor scored the other run for the B-Royals in a 1-for-3 night. Murray Watts went 1-for-2 with two walks, while Antonio was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Ahmed, who had struggled against the Royals this season, was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brandon Drury continued his dominance over Burlington with a 3-for-5 night, scoring two runs. Beckwith was 3-for-3 with three home runs, giving him 11 on the season, and knocking in five runs. Chase Larson was the only other Brave with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with a double.
After a league-wide off day on Monday, the Royals hit the road for a six-game road trip, beginning in Bluefield.
