DANVILLE, Va. - The Danville Braves completed their second series sweep of the season and extended their win streak to six games with a 8-1 victory over the Kingsport Mets Wednesday night at American Legion Post 325 Field.
The D-Braves opened the scoring in their second at bats. Third baseman Trenton Moses grounded a ball to a charging Pedro Perez, but Moses hustled hard down the line and beat his counterpart's throw to the bag. Control problems plagued Mets starter Persio Reyes as Moses moved to second on a wild pitch. Reyes then issued a free pass to right fielder Blake Brown and catcher Nick De Santiago blooped a ball to load the bases. Shortstop Eric Garcia then hit a would-be double play ball to shortstop Gavin Cecchini, but he booted the ball, which resulted in a fielder's choice RBI.
Back-to-back hits off D-Braves starter Rafael Briceno put the Mets on the board in the third. With two outs and nobody on, second baseman Yeixon Ruiz slapped a single to short left. Center fielder Eris Peguero then doubled him in to tie it at one all.
But that lead didn't last long. Second baseman Levi Hyams hammered a ball to right to lead off the home half of the third. Reyes then put a passed ball past his catcher, Alex Machillanda, and then balked, which pushed Hyams to third. Designated hitter Carlos Franco then hit a sac fly to score Hyams and the D-Braves retook the lead, 2-1. Reyes and the K-Mets bullpen combined for five wild pitches on the night.
Brown doubled to the deep end of the outfield to extend his hit streak to five games and lead off the fourth. De Santiago pushed Brown to third on a productive groundout to second. Garcia then hit into his second fielder's choice RBI of the game to give the D-Braves a 3-1 lead. Hyams, with some heads-up base running in the fifth, stretched his single into a double before Sanchez pulled a double down the left field line to give the D-Braves a four-run cushion. The D-Braves added two insurance runs in the eighth inning for the game-lasting 8-1 lead.
Briceno (1-0) fanned a game-high nine strikeouts before handing the ball over to the bullpen in the seventh. He pitched 6.0 innings of one-run ball and bounced back beautifully from a rough start in his last outing. Between Briceno and the bullpen, the D-Braves pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts for a new season-high. The D-Braves chased Reyes (0-2) after 4 and 1/3. Reyes recorded his second loss of the season, which keeps the K-Mets in the cellar with a 1-8 record.
The D-Braves play nine of their next 12 ballgames on the road with the team in Greeneville for a three-game series tomorrow through Saturday. The Braves welcome the Burlington Royals to town, July 1 - 3, for the first of three contests this season. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Ticket Office at (434) 797-3792 or in-person at the ALP 325 Field Box Office (Mon. - Fri., 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.).
