Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Cyclones starter Harol Gonzalez struck out 10 over 6.0 dominant innings and eight of the nine Cyclones position players collected a hit, as Brooklyn defeated the State College Spikes 6-2 on Tuesday night.
Brooklyn wasted no time getting on the board on Tuesday night, drawing first blood in the top of the 1st. Nick Sergakis got things started with a one-out single before stealing second to move into scoring position. Jay Jabs followed with a walk and Jacob Zanon had an infield single to load the bases for Blake Tiberi. The former Louisville Cardinal took advantage of the scoring chance with an RBI groundout that made it 1-0 Brooklyn.
The Cyclones lead would swell in the top of the second. Arnadlo Berrios doubled to start the frame and quickly came around on an RBI single from Brandon Brosher to make it 2-0. After Brosher was retired on the basepaths, Dale Burdick singled and stole second before coming home thanks to a throwing error from State College shortstop Jose Martinez that made it 3-0 after two.
That be more than enough offense for the Cyclones with Harol Gonzalez on the mound. The Brooklyn starter cruised through the first 4.0 innings, striking out eight without allowing a hit but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Bladimil Franco and Ricardo Bautista started the frame with back-to-back singles that put runners on the corners with nobody out. But Gonzalez induced a double play that plated a run, and cleared the bases to put the breaks on the rally and keep Brooklyn in front 3-1.
After trading zeroes, the Cyclones tacked on some insurance runs in the top of the eighth. Dale Burdick, who came into the game 1-for-29 to start the year, collected his third hit of the night with an RBI single that made it 4-1 and Gene Cone and Jay Jabs each worked bases loaded walks to push the Cyclones advantage to 6-1.
LHP Logan Taylor tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief before turning the ball over to Alejandro Castro who allowed a single run in the ninth to make the final score 6-2.
The win snapped State College's six game winning streak and was Brooklyn's third win in a row. The Spikes and Cyclones will square off in the middle game of the three-game set tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM. RHP Merandy Gonzalez will make the start for Brooklyn.
