Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

FISHKILL, NY - Eight walks by Hudson Valley pitchers and four errors by Renegade fielders led to five unearned runs and two bases-loaded walks in Tuesday night's 12-6 loss to Staten Island at Dutchess Stadium. The game was called in the top-of-the-seventh inning due to rain.

An ugly top of the first inning put the Renegades in an early hole as the team allowed five unearned runs. Designated hitter Ricardo led the game off with a single then moved to second on a stolen base. The next hitter, second baseman then hit a groundball to shortstop Joseph Astacio who threw to third to try and get a fielder's choice on Ferriera. However, the throw was wide and runners were at the corners.

After third baseman Mandy Alvarez singled in a run, first baseman Kane Sweeney hit a groundball to Hudson Valley first baseman Jose Rojas with Yankees at first and second. Rojas threw to Astacio covering second, however Joseph missed the bag. The return throw to try and get Sweeney was in the dirt and got away from Rojas at first to score Solak and make the score 2-0.

After a fielder's choice, rightfielder Timmy Robinson laced and RBI double to left to give Staten Island a three-run lead. Leftfielder Kendall Coleman followed with what was thought to be a two-run double down the rightfield line. Both runners scored, however the umpire ruled Coleman missed first and he was called out on appeal. That wiped the double away, but Coleman was still credited with two RBI and the Yankees led 5-0.

Staten Island would pad their lead in the third on an RBI single by Robinson who then added two more with a two-run double in the fourth to give him four RBI for the game and give the Yankees an 8-0 lead.

The Renegades got on the board in the fourth where with two out, catcher Joe Olson picked up his first professional RBI with a single to center to score third baseman Joe Popadics from second.

However, the Yankees put the game away in the fifth by plating four more runs thanks to Renegade struggles on the mound. Reliever Deivy Mendez walked four men in the frame, including two with the bases loaded. He also allowed an RBI single to centerfielder Dom Thompson-Williams and a sac fly to rightfielder Timmy Robinson to make the score 12-1.

To their credit, the Renegades didn't quit as they put five runs on the board in the sixth. The inning began with a walk, hit batsman and single to load the bases. After a strikeout, Olson picked up his second RBI of the night with a single to left. Astacio followed with a RBI comebacker to the mound to make it 12-3. Rojas followed with a double into left-centerfield to score two runs and pull the Renegades to within 12-5. Designated hitter Miguel Hernandez smacked a double of his own to left-center to score a run, but was cut down at third trying to extend the hit into a triple, and Hudson Valley trailed 12-6.

Hudson Valley hoped to continue on the comeback trail, however heavy rains dampened those chances in the seventh as the game was stopped with two outs in the top-half.

Getting the win for Staten Island was Simon De La Rosa (2-0) who pitched well through five, then gave up five runs before leaving with two out in the sixth. All told, he went 5.2 innings and allowed six earned runs on five hits. He also walked two and struck out eight.

Renegades starter Garrett Fulenchek (0-2) suffered the loss after a rough night. The righty gave up six runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits in two innings of work. He also walked three and did not strike anybody out.

Through the errors and walks, the Yankees were led by Robinson who drove in five runs while going 3-3 with two doubles, a single, a run scored and a sac fly. Alvarez chipped in by going 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored Catcher Keith Skinner also went 3-4 with three singles and a run scored.

Olson led the offensive attack for Hudson Valley by going 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Hudson Valley travels to Staten Island tomorrow to take on the Yankees in game two of this three-game series. Right-hander Adrian Navas (1-0, 2.35 ERA) goes for the Gades against a to-be-determined pitcher for Staten Island. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. The Renegades return to Dutchess Stadium Thursday to wrap up their series against the Yankees. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:05. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
