Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost their second game in a row for the first time all season with a 9-5 loss to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Tuesday night form Eastwood Field. Clayton Brant picked up two hits and two RBIs for the Doubledays in the loss.
The Doubledays got on the board first in the top of the second inning off Scrappers right-hander Triston McKenzie. Tres Barrera led the inning off with a solo home run that was hit down the left-field line and just stayed fair to put Auburn on top, 1-0.
The Scrappers finally broke through in the fifth inning off Doubledays right-hander Carlos Acevedo. Acevedo hit Silento Sayles with a pitch to lead off the inning. Gabriel Mejia then reached base when Acevedo threw to first on a bunt, but second baseman Jake Jefferies didn't catch the ball cleanly. The error put runners on first and third with no outs. Erlin Cerda followed with an RBI single to center field that scored Sayles and moved Mejia to second base as Mahoning Valley tied the game at one. The Scrappers added another run on a Luke Wakamatsu single. Mejia scored from second and Cerda advanced to third base as Mahoning Valley took a 2-1 lead. Cerda scored on a Jodd Carter sacrifice fly out to center field to give the Scrappers a two-run lead, 3-1.
Mahoning Valley added to its lead in the sixth inning. Auburn relief pitcher Maximo Valerio walked Logan Ice, Gavin Collins, and Nate Winfrey to load the bases to begin the inning. Right-handed reliever Nicholas Conner then came into the game and struck out Sayles and Mejia with the bases loaded. With Cerda batting, Conner threw a wild pitch that allowed Ice to score from third base, Collins to advance to third, and Winfrey to move to second as the Scrappers extended their lead to three, 4-1. Conner walked Cerda to load the bases once again. Wakamatsu reached on an infield single to score Collins, move Winfrey to third base, and advance Cerda to second, and Mahoning Valley's lead was 5-1. Carter followed with a two-run single, scoring Winfrey and Cerda to give the Scrappers a 7-1 advantage.
The Doubledays would respond in the top of the seventh though. With two outs, Nick Banks singled to center field. David Kerian then reached on a fielding error by Collins, the third baseman. With runners on first and second, a pitch hit Andres Martinez to load the bases. Luis Vilorio then hit a ball to third base where Collins once again misplayed the ball, allowing Banks and Kerian to score to cut Mahoning Valley's lead to four, 7-3. With Martinez on second and Vilorio on first, Clayton Brandt doubled to left field to score both Martinez and Vilorio to pull the Doubledays to within two, 7-5.
Mahoning Valley bounced back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ice walked, Collins singled, and Winfrey singled to load the bases. Ice scored and Collins moved to third on a Sayles sacrifice fly out to give the Scrappers an 8-5 advantage. Collins scored when Mejia grounded into a fielder's choice as Mahoning Valley went up, 9-5.
The Doubledays and Scrappers will play the second game of a three-game series Wednesday night at Eastwood Field. Left-hander Tyler Watson will pitch for Auburn against Mahoning Valley left-hander Juan Hillman. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
