Cyclones Sweep Doubleheader from HV

Brooklyn, NY -- Because of the impending storms that Hurrican Irene presents, Sunday's game was cancelled and was made up today as part of a doubleheader. The Brooklyn Cyclones (38-28) defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades (32-35) by three runs in both games. Brooklyn overcame an early 4-0 deficit in game one to defeat the Renegades by a score of 7-4. In game two, the Cyclones used a three-run fourth inning to cruise to a 3-0 victory.

Game One

Entering the evening leading the Wild Card by mere percentage points and with the threat of Hurricane Irene looming, the Brooklyn Cyclones took the opener of a doubleheader by defeating the Hudson Valley Renegades by a score of 7-4.

After beginning the bottom of the second inning by putting the first two runners on base by way of a Richard Lucas strikeout on a wild pitch and a Brian Harrison single, the Cyclones were retired on two strikeouts and inning-ending groundout by Xorge Carrillo.

The Renegades quickly responded by adding a run on a double that landed on the warning track in left, scoring Gerardo Biagini who began the inning with a double of his own to right-center. After starter Chris Hilliard was replaced in favor of Casey Hauptman, the Renegades plated their second of the inning on a ground ball to first baseman Richard Lucas .

Brooklyn's frustrations continued in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases, Renegades' starter Robert Dickmann was able to escape the jam unscathed by striking out Brandon Brown and inducing a 6-4-3 double play from Javier Rodriguez.

Hudson Valley took advantage of the opportunity by plating two more runs in the top of the fourth. With one out, consecutive singles by Raymond Church and Chris Winder respectively set the stage for an RBI double by Tanner Biagini and a sacrifice fly by Brian Bryles.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Cyclones were finally able to generate the necessary offense that will surely be needed down the stretch, all with two outs recorded. Danny Muno brought home the first run with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch before Brandon Brown cleared the bases with a double on a line drive to left. Javier Rodriguez moments later gave Brooklyn a 5-4 lead with a sky-high ground-rule double to left after a diving Craige Lyerly was unable to come up with the catch.

Two more insurance runs were tallied in the bottom of the fifth on another bases loaded hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch by Dickmann.

Orlando Tovar earned his first save of the season by contributing 2.2 innings with three strikeouts on two hits.

With the win, the Cyclones tied the largest deficit overcome this season for the third time.

Game Two

The Cyclones picked up their third consecutive victory in the nightcap, defeating the Renegades by a score of 3-0. Starter Randy Fontanez pitched valiantly, striking out three and allowing just four base runners in 4.0 innings of work. However, the righthander did not factor into the decision. RHP Steve Winnick (3-0, 2.93) earned the win in relief after tossing a scoreless fifth inning.

The Cyclones were held hitless through three innings, but broke up the no-hit bid in the bottom of the fourth with Danny Muno 's lead off single. Muno was promptly brought around to score by Ismael Tijerina on a double that one-hopped the left field wall. The Renegades induced a fly out from the next batter, but Richard Lucas kept the rally moving with a line drive triple to right field to score Tijerina and push the score to 2-0. The Jacksonville native was then plated on a suicide squeeze bunt laid down by Brandon Brown, giving Brooklyn a 3-0 lead.

LHP Jeremy Gould was brought on to pitch the sixth inning, but ran into a major distraction just before he delivered his first pitch -- the Coney Island Fireworks. Still, the lefthander allowed just one runner and struck out two en route to tossing a scoreless inning.

With a three run lead heading into the seventh inning, LHP T.J. Chism was brought on to pitch. The lefty allowed a lead off single, but promptly retired three straight Renegades to secure the 3-0 win and his fourth save of the season.

Although both Williamsport and Staten Island won tonight, Brooklyn's two victories allowed them to pick up a 0.5 game on both teams. The Cyclones now lead the 'Cutters in the Wild Card chase by 0.5 a game and trail the Yankees in the McNamara Division by 3.5 games.

Because Saturday's game at Hudson Valley has been cancelled due to Hurricane Irene, the Cyclones will return to action at MCU Park on Monday, August 29 for a doubleheader against the Renegades starting at 6 p.m. Both games will be seven innings. RHP Marco Camarena (2-3, 3.27) will pitch the first game and RHP Eduardo Aldama will take the hill for the second game. It will be Meet the Cyclones Monday and fans will have the opportunity to meet their favorite Cyclones on the field after the game.
