Jamestown Jammers News Release

NILES, Ohio - In his third season in Jamestown, right-handed pitcher Josh Hodges has put it all together.

The 6-7 righty dominated Mahoning Valley to earn his New York-Penn League leading eighth win of the season as the Jammers beat the Scrappers, 6-3, Friday night at Eastwood Field. Hodges, who was named an all-star, gave up five hits and two earned runs and fanned six in 7.2 innings to get the purple and green back to .500 at 33-33.

After pounding out 13 hits and scoring 11 runs on Thursday, the Jammers carried that momentum into Friday with three runs in the first inning.

Austin Barnes got things started with a one-out single then Brian McConkey walked. Josh Adams followed with a liner to right to score one before two more runs came in on a Terrence Dayleg frozen rope to right.

It looked like that would be all Hodges would need as he retired the first 12 batters he faced, and Jamestown added an insurance run in the fourth on a single by Barnes.

Then, in the fifth, Jamestown added two more runs. Adams and Dayleg had consecutive hits to begin the inning before Viosergy Rosa advanced the pair 90 feet on a ground out. Kentrell Dewitt bounced a ball back through the middle to make it 6-0 in favor of the Jammers.

However, the Scrappers attempted to claw back into the game in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan Smith and Jake Lowery walked to end the perfect game to start the inning. Hodges got the next batter to fly out, but Cody Elliott and Jerrud Sabourin both had seeing-eye singles to cut the Jamestown advantage to four.

Hodges settled down after that and pitched into the eighth inning for the second start in a row before being lifted for reliever and fellow all-star Chase Wier with two outs and two men on.

Wier fanned Tony Wolters to end the threat, but he made things interesting in the ninth.

He gave up a double to Todd Hankins to begin the frame before retiring the next two batters. Alex Lavisky delivered a RBI single to put the tying run in the on-deck circle; however, Elliott struck out to end the contest and give Wier his second save.
