Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers dethroned the Vermont Lake Monsters atop the Stedler division after blanking their division rival 5-0 on Friday night at Dodd Stadium.

The Tigers are now atop the division, while the Lake Monsters, who had been tied or alone in first place in the division every day this season, are a half game behind Connecticut.

Tommy Collier tossed 5.1 shutout innings to earn his third win of the season, while Kurt Wunderlich suffered the loss for Vermont.

The Tigers starters have been nearly untouchable since the All-Star break. In the starters ten starts since the break they have combined to give up just seven earned runs through 67.2 innings, which is good for a 0.98 ERA.

Connecticut broke a scoreless game in the fifth inning. Zach Maggard, Edgar Corcino and Chad Wright hit consecutive singles; Wright's was an RBI base hit to put the Tigers up 1-0. Corcino came around to score on a throwing error by the Vermont reliever Omar Duran to make it 2-0.

In the top of the sixth Vermont presented a huge threat. They loaded the bases with no outs. However, Collier struck out Dusty Robinson before giving way to Jeff Barfield out of the bullpen. Barfield came in and struck out Jordan Tripp and induced a groundball out from Chad Lewis to hold the Lake Monsters off the board.

The Tigers added three runs in the bottom half of the sixth and went on for the 5-0 win.

Wright finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's, Aaron Westlake reached base in all four times he came up by going 3-for-3 with a walk and Dean Green added two doubles.

The Tigers will continue the pivotal two-game series with Vermont tomorrow afternoon. First pitch for tomorrow was moved up to 1:05 PM due to the impending inclement weather.
