TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: For the first time since 2006-07, the Cyclones will open the regular season at home. That year, Cincinnati captured a 3-1 win over the now-defunct Pensacola Ice Pilots. Since then, the Clones have collected a 2-4 record in season-opening games and they'll look to bring home win number three tonight - as they welcome in the Wheeling Nailers to U.S. Bank Arena.
TONIGHT'S PROMOTION: 2012 First Face-Off - The first 7,500 fans through the gates will receive a FREE 2012-13 Magnetic Schedule courtesy of The Plastic Surgery Group. Plus, fans can purchase John Morrell Hot Dogs, Donatos Pizza, and Soda for just $1!
SCOUTING THE NAILERS: Clark Donatelli's team finished second in a tough Atlantic Division race last year with a record of 37-26-4-5. Although it came down to the very end, the Nailers secured the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race. They were quickly ousted, though, by the Kalamazoo Wings in the opening round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs - dropping the series 3-1. Like Cincinnati, the Nailers have plenty of returning faces, including their leading scorer Chris Barton. In his rookie campaign, Barton was among the ECHL's top first-year players with 60 points (29 goals, 31 assists) in 69 games. Their team captain, Paul Crowder, is back as well; in 2011-12 he collected 50 points (23 goals, 27 assists) in 57 games. In net for the Nailers is third-year goaltender Patrick Killeen. In 36 games between the pipes last season, he earned a 19-12-4 record with a 2.69 goals-against average.
The Returners: Cincinnati has plenty of familiar faces on the 2012-13 roster. A total of 12 players from last year's squad are back for another season - including three of their top four point-getters: Taylor Aronson, Brian O'Hanley, Maury Edwards, Mathieu Aubin, Garrett Wilson, David MacDonald, Dan Eves, Mike Liambas, Mike Pelech, Chris Reed, Brian Foster, and Anthony Luciani.
Captain's Log: Cyclones captain Mathieu Aubin is closing in on several club records. Now in his sixth season with the Clones, Aubin has posted 219 points - which is second all-time behind Barret Ehgoetz (289). He ranks third in games played (224) and will pass Scott Reynolds this season for second all-time. He also ranks third in goals (93), needing just 8 to pass Ehgoetz and needs just six more game-winning goals to become the all-time leader.
Between the Pipes: As is customary, the Cyclones have been assigned a goaltender from each parent club. From the Florida Panthers, Brian Foster will be in a Cincinnati jersey once again. Last season, he collected a 16-11-2 record with a 2.78 goals-against average. From the Nashville Predators, the Cyclones will have rookie Zoltan Hetenyi, who is making his North American hockey debut this weekend after playing overseas. In limited action with Jokerit in Finland last year, he earned a 1.78 GAA.
Staying Clean: The Cyclones were one of the ECHL's least-penalized teams in 2011-12. They were whistled for an average of 14 penalty-minutes per game, which was fourth-fewest in the league a season ago.
